The Stranger, starring Welles & Robinson. Actually cheaper than a DVD-R, I think.

I got that one from a company called Alpha Video, (I think they're out of business now) but they released a ton of public domain films from the 20s-50s from the independent (or as they were called poverty row) companies of those times. They were usually going for $5.00 or less.

Now you can set of 100 of these movies for $10 based on genre (Horror, Sci-Fi, Westerns, Mysteries, WWII Movies, etc) at stores like Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, and Meijers pretty easily.

Drive I got which I bloody love. I think Harold Pinter wrote the dialgoue though - no one really taks much, and its all about the slight nuances of fols behaviour. Ace noodly electro soundtrack too

I also got Marvel Avengers Assemble (which is what Avengers is rather clumsily titled on the off chance someone might confuse Thor and Black Widow for Steed and Mrs Peel...). I got the Asda exclusive (as glamorous as it sounds) which came with a 'graphic novel'. It is actually a graphic novel, a straight reprint of Marvel's Season One GN of the same name. Its just a cheap comic reprint of the thing. Its not very impressive, in all honesty. Peter David clearly handed a project he clearly wasn't that interested and doesn't really sell the 'Season One' line very well at all.

Its interesting watching Avengers away from the cinema. The experience is quite different, and you really notice how slight the main plot of the film actually is. Thankfully, the rest of the film holds up well with each of the characters getting good screen time and the set pieces holding up well. It does loose its sense of scale on the small screen (unless of course, you'r e one of these classy folk whom has a TV the size of planet bolted to your wall). I think I would happily watch a film about Black Widow and Hawkeye doing SHIELD based spy hijinks. Be quite good that.

As ever, the DVD has pish all extra features. They're on the Blu-Ray to entice you into upgrading by the back door. Bastards.

Red face

Worse than that, the UK discs are edited, a shot of a spear coming out of someone's chest has been cut out.

It's caused a fanboy storm (along with the commentary being left off because of deadlines when all they had to do was wait a week to release it. Which still doesn't explain why only Sainsbury's get the documentary), especially when Disney claimed with a straight face it was the version seen in UK cinemas and everyone was just misremembering (including the BBFC who mentioned the spear in their detailed explanation of their rating at the time).

Oddly, it's actually an entirely new edit of the film: UK titles; German censorship and the second US post credits scene that hadn't even been filmed when it was released to cinemas in the UK. It would have taken less effort to not **** it up.

Luckily the American blu ray is region free, so that's what I'm getting.

My Bond 50 boxset should be with me by Monday. Roger Moore in HD. And the other fellahs. It's actually the first time the Craig Casino Royale has been released uncut as well. Oddly- though America had some violence cut out- the UK apparently lost an additional line with Le Chief admiring Bond's cock. Because obviously beating it with a rope is OK but implied homoerotic content IS EVIL.

well, the film doesn't lose anything for having someone getting stabbed edited out. just goes to show how much that scene registered with me. f**kin' crybaby fanboys, its not as if the story is utterly destroyed by removing that...

Hmm. Interesting that the Sainsbury's release has the commentary on. I'm not surprised its had an apparently problematic release to shiny disc format. I'll bet because this did so well at the box office, various retailers have been demanding allsorts to get their hands on it 'first' to cash in which means a rushed and unsatisfactory release. As much as consumers might be impaitent, there's surely something to be said for the pressure exerted by large retailers on their suppliers and so on. As any farmer will tell you.

Still annoyed that DVD has become the poor relation to Blu Ray these days. High Definition, 3D online commentary jizz not enough of a sell so lets put all the extra content off of the DVD onto the BR instead. That'll teach folk for not upgrading to the latest technological white elephant.

Speaking of which, how pathetic are queues of people waiting to buy Apple's latest technological fart? It's a f**king phone for f**ks sake.

I really wish people had some sense of perspective. More than that, will the iphone 5 actually improve people's lives? Is there anything realisitcally that is such a step forward that it becomes as important as a kidney to folk? NO!!! I was gutted the other day when I broke my Nokia 3600 Slide. It's been through nearly four years of service and does everthing i need it to. Does web, email, plays songs, has a radio. I can keep in touch with people. Its all i need. Looking around, you either get a really cheap piece of crap for a tenner or you pay 50 or above for a rudimentary lower tier 'Smart Phone' (i'm on PAYG - f**k you contracts!). I bought another Slide off of ebay and am happy again. Technology should be in your life because it serves a practical, functional use. I can't get my head around people whom are slavishly chasing the next big thing and whatever silicone jizz falls out of Apple.

I am having such a ramble here, but am actually quite cheery and have just watched Doctor Who (I don't want the Ponds to go!!!!), got a brew and am listening to Carly Rae Jepson!

Well in fairness, it's the needless nature of the censorship and Disney lying about it that's caused the issues as much as anything (though apparently Disney UK have been buggering up their disc releases in relation to the states for a while so this may just have been the tipping point).

Sorry, meant to say Sainsbury's have the hour and a half documentary that's on all US versions, no Brit version has the commentary.

Two disc editions where all the features could have fitted on one disc used to annoy me as well, though that seems to have been done less now they've got blu ray to do that sort of thing with.

On the one hand, I can understand the Blu Ray having more. It's got more storage space and costs more so they should be using it. But there's no reason for not using all the room on a DVD as well.

Yep, though for me my Samsung Note is a wonderful thing. I can sit watching Predator 2 on Blu Ray whilst writing for my website and sitting in my pants in my room. The future is here.

Only problem with public domain films is that there's no incentive for anyone to keep an eye on the quality... The print on this disc looks like it's from about 1910, which is a shame as the direction, being Welles, is gorgeous.

It's a catch 22 isn't it, in that a remastered print of an old film wouldn't be public domain as whoever did the remastering would have a claim on their work on it.

My Bond 50 set arrived today. Ohhhhhh, it looks lovely. And has a gap for Skyfall when that comes out. Niffty.

Sad but true.

I know that MGM has re-released The Stranger in the USA and from what I read that version looks better. Now if only Criterion Collection would release The Trial (Alpha Classics released it too) and Chimes of Midnight in the USA, I would be a very happy Welles fan.

In a stunning turn of events after a long period of not buying DVDs, I picked up 'The Big Bang Theory' Season 5. Missed this season last year due to it coinciding with my daughters bedtime and my wife and I not wanting to pay for a DVR. So far it's been quite hilarious!

Also gave up on hoping for the Megatron transforming DOTM DVD case, won a brand new DOTM (4 disc one, or whatever they called) off eBay.

Recently got fed up after spending half an hour sifting through my DIVX discs for a film and have decided to actually, y'know, start buying my favourite films on DVD. DVDs are addictively cheap, aren't they?

Arrivals thus far:
Withnail & I
The Long Good Friday
Excalibur
A Clockwork Orange
