I think it's the snake-tail arm that does it for me. it looks so stupid but it's so much fun.Brendocon 2.0 wrote:Quickstrike's toy's ****ing awesome and I'll cut anyone who disagrees.
I love the Fuzors, but I totally get why not a lot of people do. They're just about the weirdest of an already-weird bunch. I love them for how unique they are, though, both in terms of their mutated beast modes and their funky transformations.Dead Man Wade wrote:Quickstrike has never been one of my favorites, but then, I don't really like the Fuzors all that much. I've held on to Quickstrike and Silverbolt up to now because they were in the show, but that's about it.
But Silverbolt is probably the only one that I'd consider a conventionally good design.
Well, now I know what I'm doing when I get home...Skyquake87 wrote:I like that Quickstrike squirts water

Combiner Wars Motormaster And Blackjack
yaaaaay!!! At last. Motormaster is a pretty ugly, blocky mis-proportioned fellow with his big fat arms and legs and tiny crying face head in a box. He looks awful, but is really good fun! All chunky chunkness and the alt mode looks mean. As ever, the crappy wheels rob the thing of any playability in this mode. Torso mode is squat and looks like a steroid cheese dream crossed with a horned sumo wrestler squeezing out a massive turd. Menasor's as ugly and horrible looking as all his promo shots make out. He's a chunky little monkey oh yes he is. With a big pointy sword that his swollen hands look a bit ridiculous holding.
Blackjack is a nifty little Legends (BASIC!) toy. He's a well made little toy with a really pap accessory. Car mode is good and is the only pass Hasbro get from me on the cheap crappy clip on wheels, as they actually work at this scale. Robot mode looks good, but he's useless as chest armour, as Motormaster's chest nipples are like traffic cones and he slowly slides off. All the time. Balls.
If nothing else, its nice to see Combiner Wars continuing the mix of fun and frustration

I finally opened my care packages from one Rack n Ruin and one Brendocon 2.0. They contained a bunch of Voyagers: Hot Spot, Rhinox, Blitzwing and Sandstorm.
Pretty chuffed with them all round. I can see why Blitzwing is so unpopular but I have a soft spot for 'Decepticon cannon fodder' and there's no one who fits that bill like Blitzwing.
Having Hot Spot in there really shows how the design staff have learned some lessons from Generations - he's simple, chunky and really fun. Pity about the dodgy plastic on the ladder assembly and the hollowness - crude oil ain't getting any cheaper.
Have yet to get a good transformation out of Rhinox but I'm not beat yet.
Sandstorm is just magnificent.
And those are my brief words on ancient toys.

Went to Merry Hill (or Intu Merry Hill as it's apparently called now. 'Cause people are like...really intu it) for the first time in years and picked up a Rhinox from Toys'R'Us for 12 and a bit pounds (the price label said it had only been reduced to 16, result!).
At that price I could only think "Why not?" Or, if you will, "Rhi-not?".
First impressions are it's a flawed toy, but flawed in interesting ways. It feels like they're experimenting with something a bit different with the flappy skin and though it doesn't quite work it's an interesting development with potential for the future. I'm not sure of the relative release dates/development times (or even if the movie Autobot toy tries this as well), but it does feel like they were mucking about trying to create Crosshairs' coat and thought "Hey, this will work for Rhinox's little leather skirt as well!".

Found CW Sunstreaker and Mirage. Now, I have enough limbs to make 4 combiners.
Kre-O RiD Underbite. I like this guy enough that I'll probably build more Kre-O quadripeds out of my spare parts. He comes with an Optimus kreon with a jetpack, which can carry the stasis pod. Optimus' helmet lacks a faceplate. Since there's already an RiD OP kreon in his kit, I'd've prefered someone like Drift or Windblade.
One flaw is that Underbite's knees use those 4x1 tiles with a hinge in the middle that lets them fold into 2x2 tiles. Earlier uses, like Ratchet and Prowl's knees, used two of these pieces per joint to make the joint stronger. Underbite only uses one, so the lower legs flop around. I added the second hinges myself to make the legs sturdier. There was nothing in the build to prevent these pieces from fitting, Hasbro was just too cheap to include the extra pieces.

When out and about today I got CW Groove (completing my Defensor) from Wilko's for £10 but I later found him at TRU for £8. I went to TRU looking for a CW Ultra Magnus but I ended up coming away with AoE Dinobot Slash.
Groove is fun and a little cutie even if he is a bit oddly proportioned and far less substantial than say Bombshell and Powerglide. I ended up a bit underwhelmed by Slash after looking for him for so long. I think the toy overdoes it a bit with the soft plastic, especially on the tail, then again he is almost exclusively made from spikes. He is satisfyingly similar to BW Dinobot but in robot mode he comes off as far too chunky and stumpy for my liking.
Also TRU has combiner limbs reduced to £11 and Wilkinson's has the 30th anniversary Generations voyagers half price.

Generations Jetfire
After scoffing at this enormo figure at AA last year, I've actually gone and bought one from barrel-scrapers B&M (having dithered for the best part of a month). First off, the positives. Hasbro have done a commendable job of updating Jetfire and the figure is a huge improvement on his '06 Voyager toy. The sculpting and overall look is excellent. He's a slick looking outer-space science robot. With lots of guns. The chrome isn't quite as gaudy in hand as it looks in photos. The transformation is clever and well thought out and the alt mode is fantastic, with lovely swing wings. Best of all, you can stick his face mask on is gun for a shooty face gun!
The negatives are that this is a £50 toy (albeit one I bought at a hefty mark down) and it doesn't feel special enough to justify the leader price point. At all. He's as light as a feather and the honeycombed, lightweight plastics coupled with some incredibly heavy ratchet joints which conspire to make both manipulating and transforming him a clumsy and heart-stopping experience. Mine is also blessed with an incredibly loose neck, so his head flops about like a bra on a washing line on a windy day. The clip on armour is a little bit feeble, whilst the boosters work well, the arm and leg stuff doesn't add the heft it should.
I want to like him more, maybe with a few more goes I'll get into him (I like my vintage Jetfire, but I'm scared I'll break him one of these days and I do want one I can play with). I really like the idea and the look of him (The mould being used for the seekers doesn't feel right to me), but he has just a few too many flaws to be essential. As he's on clearance, it is difficult to say no to the price though

Pretty much my thoughts on the chap too. Nice enough in terms of design and look from a slight distance but if I'd paid new Leader-class RRP for him I'd probably be marching on Hasbro UK with a pitchfork. But yeh, he looks like Jetfire enough to go nicely with a Classics or even MP collection. Like the transformation a lot, myself - the original's been ripped off so many times it was nice to have something a bit different on the update.

For some reason, Eject's head refuses to go in all the way, meaning it's impossible to transform him into cassette mode - and Hasbro must've glued his torso shut or something because undoing the screws didn't help at all at trying to open it and see what's wrong. The best thing I could do was shine a bright light through him and there's something attached to the bottom of his head preventing it from going any further than his crest, but since I can't actually open him to do something about it...

Thanks to a trade with a nice chap over on TFW2005, I now have a Minimus Ambus to go with my TT Ultra Magnus.
On a related note, Magnus now has silver ear antennae, and a white sticker covering the red patch on the cab roof. Following transformation to alt mode and back I like the guy a lot more. And now he is complete.

Kreo Battlechangers Hound - Another who needs to be separated at the waist to transform, but still good. His backpack is less floppy than most, due to the way the wheels are mounted, which also allows one of his weapons to be mounted as the shoulder cannon.
Does anyone else's CW Sunstreaker's legs not sit flush together? Mine has a gap between them, which I don't have with Breakdown. It's moot in robot mode, and in car mode it's covered by the Kickpuncher as engine block. But, it leaves a nasty gap as Ultra Prime's arm. I'm wondering if this is a widespread issue, or worth exchanging.

Mine is fine. Although does the plastic on yours feel strange? Not bad, but different? Mine feels a little weird on the yellow plastic bits.Tantrum wrote: Does anyone else's CW Sunstreaker's legs not sit flush together? Mine has a gap between them, which I don't have with Breakdown. Combiner Wars Defensor and Protectobots
I am totally enthralled about my latest acquisitions: Combiner Wars Protectobots. These are some of the best transformers I have seen in a long time, simply because of quality and simplicity.
I have always been a fan of the Protectobots-- The original Rescue Bots! The original vehicles were a Mitsubishi Fuso ladder truck, a Nissan 300 ZX, Kawasaki or Yamaha motorcycle, and a Toyota Van, as well as a rescue helicopter of some description. Sense G1 , the licensing thing has given way to more fantastical vehicles (First Aid is an Ambulance-truck on steroids). Streetwise is a Koenigsegg -like pursuit car . Rook is a believable APC looking thing while Hot Spot and Blades both tie for the most believable alt forms-- Hot Spot's Rosenbaueresque ladder truck and Blades Rescue Chopper. The only casualty from the original bunch is Groove (which was made as a scout class-- try to find him!!).
What do I think of the new bunch? I think they're phenominal!! These are transformers the way I always thought they should be built-- strong, versatile and somewhat believable in alt modes. After watching a few youtube videos, I came away with the impression that the Combiner Wars should actually be an animated series. My only G1 Protectobot was First Aid. He was the passifist who got shot by Swindle in the series. He was a cute little guy with a little character and conviction. Hot Spot was my second favorite, then Blades, Streetwise, then Groove. They were all awesome because they weren't just warriors, they were rescuers. Youtube's video shows Defensor rescuing a train without First Aid, All under Trypticon's nose!
Today, after combining all five protectobots, I see a massive robot larger than any other in my collection, the mighty Defensor!! Defensor is easily my favorite combiner, because of aforementioned qualities of the protectobots. Sure, there were some before Defensor, but only Computron is more intelligent than Defensor among the gestalts. He has a 10 for strength and 9 for endurance. What won me over is the color scheme-- Face it, a blue fire truck? That'll raise eye brows.
Also, the versatility of each protectobot makes it possible for each to become an arm or a leg. Each foot could flip out to become a hand or a weapon-- Ingenious!! Each one also has superior sculpts to the original with real detail! The heads of each are a real triumph!
Qualitywise, the only suspect one of the bunch was actually Hot Spot. The inferior plastic makes me think this one needs a little tlc since it has all the connector points and some pretty cool parts.
Hot Spot also has an unofficial "rescue platform" or gun platform mode. You can place Blades on the legs to make a convenient helipad while the ladder becomes a gun tower.
Overall, the Protectobot set is a winner! I recommend it to anyone.

TF: RiD Gold Armor Legion Class Grimlock
Found this guy at Wal-Mart. It's not a bad little figure. The main reason I picked it up is, aside from providing another code for the iOS game to scan(I'm up to 3 figures! Someday I'll be able to get Ironhide!), the black/ neon green the figure usually comes in is awful. The G1 Grimmy colors work really well on the figure.
Dino mode still looks wrong, though. Less like a T-Rex and more like a gangly armed Godzilla.

Saw one in Tesco the other evening... the show colours work better on what's fundamentally a different character. Might have worked slightly better in actual gold than orange.Heinrad wrote: the black/ neon green the figure usually comes in is awful. The G1 Grimmy colors work really well on the figure.
