I hate these things. Such an obvious cost cutting measure, but it means all your vehicular Transformers just don't play well. Boo.
I know what you mean. I finally got around to opening the Walmart G1 issues I bought this year. The 30+ year old Astrotrain design rolls better in space shuttle and locomotive modes than any of my modern sports car figures. With the cheap modern wheels, I'll often get 3 wheels per figure that roll OK and one total dud, which means the overall figure rolls poorly. I'd prefer if 3 out of 4 figures I buy have 4 good enough modern wheels, and the 4th have 4 duds. It'd be the same level of QC, but I'd get 3 decent car modes.

My other "new" figures are some Autobot mini-vehicles: Bee w/toon face, Gears, Swerve, Outback, Warpath, and Tailgate. I owned all these molds as a kid, but not all these characters, and not toon face Bee.

I also opened Soundwave and his cassettes. I already have the TRU Soundwave from a few years ago, with the extended chest that holds two tapes. But, that extended chest also looks bad in both modes, and it can be a pain to get the 2nd tape out. So, I'm glad to have a single tape figure. It's not like you can see both tapes in the double deck, anyway.

I already had Ravage and Laserbeak from that older reissue, but had to buy them again to get Frenzy and Rumble. At least the older reissue had the longer Lazerbeak barrels, so it's not a total write-off. Plus, I can keep a tape in SW's chest while displaying all 5 characters.

when I was a kid, I thought the sticker on each cassette bot was supposed to be a space scene showing parts of two planets, what with TFs being aliens and all. It wasn't until much later when I realized that they're supposed to represent reels of audio tape. So, I go to put Laserbeak in my new SW with the tape label out. And, it's completely blocked by SW's Decepticon symbol. So, I've got Lazerbeak in there bot side out, since it looks cooler.

Christmas gifts:

SS Leadfoot - He's a head shorter than the DotM deluxes of Topspin and Roadbuster. But, he's also much beefier and has a larger head. And, they're the same size in vehicle mode. At least I think so. I forgot how to do Topspin's arms and gave up on transforming him. But, his bumper-to-bumper distance seems to match the other two. My only complaint about Leadfoot is that it's hard to get his missile pods to slide onto the pegs and stay attached.

Earthrise Quintesson Judge - I'd heard of people having problems attaching the two faces that come detached in package. But, I found them both to snap on quite easily. I transformed him into his jail cell alt mode. I won't be doing that again. It's pretty pointless. I just wish there was a second post on the seat so he'd attach more firmly without rotating.

WfC Exhaust - The legs joints are a bit loose, but other than that he's nice. He even rolls well, with all 4 of cheap wheels spinning freely. I'm still glad I skipped the Wheeljack version of this mold, though. The wings are too small, and the deco was a bit underdone. As a character I don't have much familiarity with, I don't have much expectations too meet, so I'm less exacting. Hiding bits of the windshield i the legs is pretty clever.

SS Overload - I'll have to play around with posing his 4 arms less awkwardly. The arms with wheels just seem to fold into place in vehicle mode without tabbing or locking into place in anyway. Am I missing something? The giant truck mode rolls better than most car figures. It doesn't do a great job hiding all the bot parts, especially with the asymmetry of the leg connections resulting in a gappy back end.

This means I was finally able to assemble SS Devastator. I've avoided looking at pictures of him, so the first good look I got was when I put him together a few minutes ago. I figured I'd be more delighted with him as a surprise rather than something I'd seen for months. I think it worked. But, this also means I'm not quite sure if I've assembled him correctly.

Getting the limbs on is straightforward enough. I'm pretty sure bits of Mixmaster came untabbed from each other when I connected him to Scavenger. But that doesn't seem to harm the stability of the combined mode any, so I don't mind.

The real issues stem from connecting Scavenger to Overload. I slid Scav's wheel onto Over's tab, and it's holding well enough. But, Scav's other wheel is sticking out his back at a 45 degree angle. If I push it down, both of Dev's arms swing forward at the shoulders. Is something supposed to tab into place here?

Also, the halves of Overload's front end don't tab into anything. Should they? They look good and aren't floppy, so maybe that's just how they go.

My only real issue with the combined mode is the two Deluxes making a single arm. It's much bigger than the Voyager arm, which looks awkward and strains Scav's shoulder joint. It'd be OK if the larger hand could be used to hold a smaller figure, but the finger joints don't seem strong enough, that'd be even more weight on the shoulder joint, and posability is hampered by the back wheel issue from 2 paragraphs ago. If I saw a second Scrapper on sale, I might get one. I prefer asymmetrical combiners, but not as much as I prefer practical ones.

I haven't bothered with the extra piece Overload came with. I can see wanting to fill in the gap between Mixmaster's drum and cab. But, this thing just looks out of place with the rest of the figure. Plus, I'm not entirely sure that's where it goes. I also leave off Mixmaster's grill, and Scrapmetal's shield. I've tried plugging the latter into Dev's knee, but it just looks out of place.

Maybe with Skipjack in place of Rampage the color match would help. But, I like the contrast of the orange leg against the giant yellow arm hanging down. If those limbs were the same color, it'd look too busy.

Yeah, Scavenger's wheels poke out at 45* and Overload's legs just kind of float. Mistransforming Scrapmetal helps to make the hands symmetrical. All that considered, he's really quite malleable in terms of configurations. My favorite trick is to use Mixmaster's legs as mandibles for the open maw. Have fun with him!

My wife spoiled the hell out of me with three really nice figures!

Generations Selects Black Roritchi: I don't know if I've ever owned a toy whose colour changes as much under different light conditions. In daylight he's a brilliant gold. Sitting at my desk with a couple lamps on at night time, you could probably swap his purple wheels onto a Fasttrack and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Weird. He's a really nice-looking figure though, and very poseable as well. He feels like the least modular of the Weaponizers. I know he's supposed to turn into a big spear for Scorponok but he really doesn't have muck going on beyond that. His legs turn into fun roller skates but I can't figure out anything interesting to do with the rest of him, so he's more "regular guy that partsforms" and less "guy who explodes into a pile of fun bits that you can tack onto other guys".

I do hope he doesn't crumble to dust a decade from now.

Generations Selects Powerdasher Zetar: Basically the opposite of Black Roritchi...he's not the most exciting individual figure and I already had a Brunt, so I wound up tearing both of them apart and building a Voyager-sized yellow and purple brute from the pieces. The Brunt mold is probably the most boring of the four Weaponizers on its own merits, not bad but just kinda unexciting as a robot, tank or gun-pile. But having two of them makes it a whole lot more fun.

Generations Selects Rotorstorm: Spinister was my favourite Siege figure. On merit, I mean. He would have been anyway even if the toy wasn't very good, because he's Spinister, but he actually was genuinely great aside from my quibbles with the awkward second cockpit in copter mode. I remember distinctly thinking, though, "it's a good thing they'll repaint this in more boring colours down the line because it's a great toy that a lot of people won't buy because it's pink, purple and teal". Instead, we got Rotorstorm. Was the original Rotorstorm this batshit? It doesn't look like it in pictures. But this guy is bubblegum pink, three shades of blue, seafoam, silver and (very poorly painted) yellow, with a layout that makes all of those colours pop. If my Spinister hadn't acquired a Targetmaster and a snake-shield in the interim I think Rotorstorm would actually make him look like the normal one. As-is they're both gloriously nuts. Aside from the colours Rotorstorm also manages to one-up Spinister on the number of cockpits, having a third one painted on his chest. But all rights that should be stupid but with how over the top the pair of them are, it just seems right somehow.

Although January feels like 700 years ago, Spinister was the first new toy I opened in 2020. Rotorstorm is likely the last and I couldn't think of a nicer pair to bookend the year with. :)

Thanks for the links and pics, Clay. After my last post, I folded Scab's red bracket thingies down to press against the rear wheel combo. This solves the shoulder wobble problem, which also puts the left shoulder in a position to support the two Deluxes well enough. Between that, and curing the fingers a bit more, that arm looks good enough that I'm no longer considering replacing it. I may try some of your alternate forms anyway, so Devastator doesn't have some dude's face on his thumb.

Your pics also reminded me that I'd forgotten to shift the center of Mixmaster's drum forward, leaving a big gap between the head and drum section. Now that I've corrected that, I can see how the extra piece attaches, but also feel it's even less necessary. I'm not going to go so far as to throw it out, but it'll end up in a drawer or something where I may never see it again.

I have copied your idea to store Mixmaster's cab above Scavenger's head, held in place by Mix's hands.

Earthrise Thrust: Because the Seekers are a bit of an addiction, and I couldn't just stop at one. The coneheads are a trio, and my Dirge and Ramjet needed the red one to pal around with. Paid a slight mark-up for this, unfortunately; scalpers and the more greedier/greasier facet of the fandom made this guy nigh-impossible to find at standard pricing. And I sure as hell was not about to make multiple visits to Target in the middle of a pandemic in hopes of spotting out a Thrust, either.

But yeah... Thrust! Availability and price aside, not too many quibbles here as far as the toy itself is concerned. The Earthrise Seeker mold is fairly solid, already, so I already knew what I was getting into. It's good! Thrust is good. Definitely appreciate the neutral face sculpting, versus Dirge's shouty one. The base plastic is a lovely shade of red, though probably not as deep (and sparkly) as Thrust toys typically are. More of a darker crimson than maroon. Still dig it, just an observation.

One deco-related niggle I'd make--and honestly, it's down to personal preference--is the black paint on the mid-section of the jet mode, and the lack of said black paint on the nosecone. Given a choice, I will almost always pick an original toy-inspired deco over a 'toon-inspired deco.

That said, at the end of the day, I don't know how much interest he'd be to anyone other than completionists; Thrust completes a set of three... or six, if your funky. He scratches that itch for me.

Smallest Transforming Soundwave - After being reminded of the line's existence by the recent World's Smallest versions of Prime, Bee and Starscream, I went decided to look for some of the old Smallest Transforming stuff from back around 03. Finally got a Soundwave. It's actually a little bit bigger than I was expecting but still sufficiently tiny. Really like the stupidly small Ravage, even though it can barely be considered a Transformer

Earthrise Fasttrack
A Christmas gift from my sister, which was nice. He's pretty cool as a robot and space tank. I'm a bit disappointed he had to follow the original pack in toy so closely. It would have been nice to get something on a par with Titans' Full Tilt, that properly Transforms. The weaponiser gimmick isn't so great for Fasttrack, looking as he does like someone's wearing a bunch of discarded limbs. I'm not so hot on the spear mode either. The handle of the spear being formed out of the arms wielding the guns jammed together looks rubbish.

Earthrise Double Dealer
I borrowed the original toy off a friend and took it on holiday with me when I was young and absolutely loved it. Never got around to buying an original version myself (which is odd, as he's easily the cheapest Powermaster to buy complete and in decent condition on the aftermarket), so this is something of a treat. I still have the Generations toy, which I like, but this is just pure toy gold. I miss the Powermaster gimmick, but as a dual allegiance triple changer (shame this guy doesn't also get the mercenary badge sported by Selects Bugbite), he's great fun. The robot mode is a bit podgy looking, but he poses like a boss (shame about the hollow legs). The falcon or chicken or whatever is as daft and fun as the original, with the missile now being back mounted, which is an improvement. The missile launcher vehicle mode is great (can't believe all the wheels actually work, for one thing) too, just missing a bit of red paint on the wheel hubs (bugs me more than it should). I bought Double Dealer with a bit of trepidation as I wasn't 100% convinced on him and I'd heard the knees are a bit of a nightmare (no problems to report on my example), but having spent about 15 minutes queuing to buy him, it was a bit late to turn back. I'm really glad I stuck with my decision. He's great fun.

Siege Netflix Mirage (Decepticon)

A gift from the wife and kids. I like the Siege Mirage mold well enough, and this one was a surprise. The deco is interesting enough, though I am surprised they made a figure from about 30 seconds of show time. Probably makes for great play value if you have the two of them. As it is, the figure is pretty nice and fun on its own.

So after perusing the aisles of the local Walmart, which when I initially looked down them seemed to be pretty bare, I discovered the reason that the pegs were empty. They hadn't bothered hanging any of the NetFlix Earthrise figures up. I got two, and the results are.... mixed?

Bumblebee: Much like the Earthrise Soundwave, I figured I'd never see this figure out in the wild. And I really like him, and am surprised by the fact that Volkswagon let them do it(maybe a holdover from the Bumblbee movie? While he technically doesn't come with a gun, he does come with Cluffjumper's Hyperbazooka). Quality control seems a bit iffy, though. While he doesn't feel like he's going to break in half for that first transform, he's a bit more fiddly than Cliffjumper.

Elita-1: And here's the first time HasTak's QC department kind of let me down. While the mold isn't great for vehicle mode, I could at least get Arcee into vehicle mode. With Elita-1, I can get her most of the way there before the legs stop cooperating completely. Although like Arcee, I got it mainly for the robot mode sculpt, so it's not that bad. Unlike Arcee, however, the tolerances make it hard to get her into any kind of pose.

Kingdom Cyclonus

Found at Target while shopping with my family. Didn't expect to find any Kingdom stuff out just yet, but was pleasantly surprised. They had the whole first wave of all the size classes, and this is the sole one I was really interested in (though Warpath does look very nice). Exceptionally nice figure that is free of kibble in both modes. The purple is a touch light for my tastes, but it does match the cartoon. Seems like this one would have been a better fit in the SS86 line, but I'll take it. Compared to a lot of recent Gen figures though, it lacks a lot of robot-y details, and comes off a bit too smooth. Oh well. He's still awesome.

I noticed that today too. Chunky ankles, semi-tiny feet. Still stand well though, since the overall footprint is big.

Went to Target yesterday to pick up a Blackarachnia I saw a few days ago. Simply to get something new that was totally different from what I have on my shelves (not a BW fan). She was gone, but a fresh stock of SS86 Hot Rod was there!

I've had a good time fiddling with this guy. Some parts feel a little touchy and I fear they may break without good handling. But as I've done the transformation a few times now, that fear is fading. At first I thought the transformation was quite complex, but later realized that it's not that bad and quite fun. Hot Rod has some great articulation, looks pretty great, and has a bunch of accessories. Likely explains the deluxe size figure in the Voyager price point, kind of like the Voyager size figures at Leader price points. The yellow joints are a bit of an eye sore (knees, hips, top of the car) but otherwise I think it works well. His shoulders also have some funky articulation but get the job done. To me, he blended the right size and look to replace my TR Hot Rod and the inner part of POTP Hot Rod on the shelf for now.

If Grimlock turns out this nice, I'll be not-so-patiently waiting on my pre-order to come through!

I'm really surprised by how much positive feedback I've seen about Cyclonus. He looks so awkwardly bulky and clunky in pictures. I'm guessing he doesn't feel that way in hand?

Toy stores are still closed around here but my first figure of 2021 arrived in the mail. Kingdom Paleotrex feels a lot more intricate than the Weaponizers and Modulators. I'm not sure if it actually breaks up into more parts and has more joints, or if it's just an optical illusion from how complex the sculpting is. It's quite poseable in robot mode and no slouch in beast mode either. It comes apart into a big ol' pile of bones, and I haven't armoured anyone up wih the parts yet but I suspect it'll look pretty cool when I do. Although it has modern joints, the aesthetics really scream "Beast Wars toy!" It's asymmetrical and has weird robot mode proportions, with a ton of sculpted detail and paint, and a mutant mask like it's 1996 again. Whoever designed this, I feel like they spent a lot of time studying the BW toys (not the show) to see what gave them a unique feel, and they did a good job briging those things to life. If Paleotrex had ball-joints, you'd forgive someone for assuming this was a 90s toy they'd just never seen before.

It's a VERY insubstantial figure, though. I'd wrongly assumed that since it was a lanky skeleton, it would wind up being a very tall Deluxe to make full use of the budget for the price point. It's actually about average height or a bit less in robot mode, and I'm fairly sure you'd need two Paleotrexes to match the weight of recent figures like Spinister or Hoist. It's a fun toy but I definitely feel like they pinched a few pennies here so that they could spend more on the show characters.

But how do you stay mad at a toy that looks like the Jurassic Park logo decided to get up and go for a walk? Obiously, you don't. Weight qualms aside, this is a really good partsformer.

I got Kingdom Vertebreak a few days ago. The mold is cute, but the colours really detract from it. In pictures it seemed like there would be more contrast than there is in real life. There's a lot of nice paint-fades designed to make it look like her bones are two different colours, but the colours are so close that you can barely tell. It just fades from a muddy grey-brown to a muddy brown-grey. I hope they do a release in more vibrant colours down the line, because this is a fun toy (good articulation, lots of molded detail) but it's just going to fade away into nothing the second I move it from my desk to a shelf.

I was supposed to get a box of Beast Hunters Predacons today, but the post office delivered it to the wrong address and I have no idea where it is. I hope they can track it down because I was really looking forward to having some dragons. :(
