What is the oldest known webpage?

Post by Sades »

Just one of those random thingies that plague the mind after two AM...

Anyone know? It'd be amusing if it were some random piece of flotsam... 'Jake was here' or somesuch...

It's more of a question of "What is the oldest surviving webpage" given how they come and go so much.

Here's one that dates back to 1993

I'll take a guess and say something the Military had from the Seventies, some classified webpage.

The internet was developed in the 1960s by scientists and the government - so the earliest forms of "webpages" probably date to there?

As I recall, the rise of the World-Wide-Web didn't happen until the early ninties. Up until then, it was just stuff like email, gopher, and Usenet.

Actually the web was originally designed by universities to allow them to share research material and other academic stuff. The military mearly hijacked it. This can be seen by the fact the early tags in HTML 1 were stuff like bold text and stuff used in formatting a scientific report

As such it would probably be some research journal

ahha!!

I must find out who created HTML ... then I can kill their siblings...

They could've made it easier to code...and less painful :)

Damn, I hate websites...

Now, that wouldn't be very festive, would it?

Here's an interesting little page I managed to dig up, if anyone else was interested and didn't know all this already...

http://members.magnet.at/dmayr/history.htm

Haven't read it all yet myself, but thought I would share. Warpers, I think they have the name of the guy who created HTML on there... :p
