Unneccesary and unofficial abbreviations that annoy you.

Post by Sades »

I guess I mean "internet slang", or something... just words that people shorten or change for no apparent reason.

My current pet peeve would be "ppl". C'mon... Peepee-ell? Doubleyu Tee Eff?!? Ar Oh Tee Ef Ell Em Ai Oh!

This is my signature. My wasted space. My little corner. You can't have it. It's mine. I can write whatever I want. And I have!

Pretty much anything like that annoys me. Basically, if you can't be bothered to type it, why should I bother to read it?

http://WWW... audible, at least. If you say the letters, it takes longer than saying World Wide Web... so, WWW for written, World Wide Web for spoken. In the case of URLs on adverts, there isn't actually any need for the WWW to be spoken unless an idiot webmaster has his/her server misconfigured (ie,. microsoft.com and http://www.microsoft.com should produce the same resultm whereas our uni server only accepts http://www.aber.ac.uk and not aber.ac.uk ...last time I checked, anway.)

I hate to imagine the carnage it would create with radio presenters giving out URLs in that format... I can fully see non-net-savvy folks actually typing that in.

What annoys me? "lol" because people so obviously aren't.

Aw, dunno... I have been on the odd occasion I've typed that... or at least shortly beforehand, anyway...

Anyways, "www" doesn't need to be given in the first place... if, unlike our uni, you know how IP setup works...

The thing that bugs me about it is that it's almost a word on its own... people don't seem to use it as an abbreviation, more as just an expression.

Anyway, I'm not that narked at the moment... I can't get angry right now... poor Spurs...

Hmm, you must hate some of my posts then. :glance: ;)

I sometimes shorten words cause i'm a slack bastard. Funnily enough though, i hate when people use "u r" for "you are".

I do too!

The only way that it is acceptable to me at all is if it's done in a text message via a mobile phone where your text space is limited overall, and abbreviations are used for obvious reasons.

I think it's because somehow, in Internet slang, "ha ha" is more used to laugh at something sarcastically than to really laugh because something is funny. I think I've used "LOL" on occasion as well ("lol" means "fun" in Dutch, by the way, so it *does* have a meaning in our language ;)), though lately I'm mostly settling for "teehee" to express laughter in the written language, if I bother to work around the laughter-emoticon, that is. :glance:

I hate seeing "ppl", and even though it's not actually an abbreviation, "w00t" just seems silly to me.

hehe I think more people would be annoyed by "www" if they pronounced it like I do: "Dubya Dubya Dubya" ;) :p :D

...don't forget that annoying devil horns thing people do without even knowing what it means. it's not an abbreviation, but it falls under annoying, along with "Kewl" and "rawks" "sux" etc...
