and purposely keep raising, even though you know you couldn't afford it, just to piss the high bidder off and make him pay more for the item that you both want?

No. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do that. If the rules of ebay don't demand it, those of etiquette should. Do unto others...

I just buy what I want and mostly get it, but the items I do not want, I don't care if she/he gets it for free or a million bucks.

I both buy and sell stuff, but never really jacked up the price.
If someone has bid before me, and I want the item, I will just bid my max price for it, and if it jacks up their bid, oh well, the way I figure it is that if they want it for more than what I want to pay for it, let 'em have it.

I never go for anything I cant afford. That means I dont go for anything thats at a ripoff (Pretty much use ebay for tf buying purposes) hence as much as I want one again I probally wont get Jetfire for a long while.
I'll place a max bid a little below what I want to pay then raise it nearer the time OR I'll snipe.Harsh but still fair way to get what you want.
As it happens I coudlent in good conscience force someone to pay more after all you dont allways know how high they did go and could end up with a waaay over inflated.

I sometimes do it so I can find out the winners max bid, so it is easier for me to win, however I don't go up by much as I don't want to pay heaps more for the item.
However my friend did it once on a Scorponok, and raised the price by $200(AUD) but other people kept on bidding, and then at the end, a guy that was yet to put a bid on, won it by maxing the bid up heaps.
