For people who want to see one of the best Bond films (and have an additional two hours to kill as well), The Spy Who Loves Me is back in cinemas as a double bill with For Your Eyes Only from the 31st in the UK, US and Austrailia. With 50% of your ticket price going to UNICEF, so you'll be doing charity beyond sitting through For Your Eyes Only.

I've seen both on the big screen before (I watched For Your Eyes Only with Sir Roger Moore. I may have mentioned that), but if screenings work out locally I can see me going again.

Strange that they'd skip Moonraker in favour of For Your Eyes Only. Moonraker may not be a good movie either, but I'd imagine it'd lend itself better to the big screen.

I watched The Mask this week! Deliberately toned down from the ultra-violence of the comics, this holds up pretty well. The CGI has aged well and only the objectification of Cameron Diaz spoils the film.

After finishing Voyager, only one Star Trek movie remained.

I'm no long certain whether Insurrection is better than Nemesis. Nemesis was better than I remembered, but it still had a lot of dumb moments.

Just watched Jurassic Park 3. I have only a vague memory of when it came out, but it was definitely nowhere as "huge" as the previous two.

Ironic, then, that it's a way better movie than The Lost World. It still falls victim to the same "cannon fodder" syndrome as the second film where most of the people who are killed onscreen are barely fleshed out and you probably won't even remember their names by the time they bite the dust, but at least they're far fewer than the absolute slaughter that took place in TLW. It also doesn't have that toy commercial feel to it.

I should probably watch Jurassic World at some point, but from what I hear, it's a bit bollocks.

Saw Casino Royale with the live orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall this weekend.

That's a good score, yo.

I was initially surprised when the Miami airport scene got a standing ovation, but then I was like "Yeah, that's like a really ****ing good action scene!" and joined in.

Sadly the program I bought (along with two Doctor Who graphic novels) got drenched by a leaky water bottle on the way home...

I watched Dragonslayer an 80s fantasy film about a socorcer's apprentice who has to battle with a dragon only he's "dead" master is the one who kill the dragon. Silly but the dragon does look cool and the final battle is awesome even if the special effect sort limited what they could do.

I watched Thor: Ragnarok the other day. It was pretty entertaining, I must say. Quite a lot of humor.

Watched The Godfather - over two nights, because I should've known better than to start a freakin' 3+ hour movie at 10 PM.

I've seen the film quite a few times now, but only now I noticed that Michael's character change from a guy who doesn't really want to get involved in the family business, only to take over, seems to kind of come out of nowhere. Him killing the Turk and the police captain isn't so far fetched, he's obviously mad about an attempt being made on his father's life, but once he returns home from Sicily, he embraces it wholesale - was it just the attempt on his life that killed his wife there that brought the change? I don't get it.

I always felt how Michael changes and is drawn in and corrupted by his position in the family was one of the greatest strengths of the first 2 Godfather films (less said about the 3rd the better).
Prior to the assassination of Sollozzo and Capt. McCluskey, Sonny questions Michael's motives, is he doing it just because he took a beating? Michael's reply is "it's just business". He is starting to realize that you can't stand aside in the violent world his family is part of.
By the time he returns from Sicily, Sonny has been assassinated. Michael has no choice but to step up; his father is still recovering, and his other brother, Fredo, is far too weak to head the family.
And yes the death of his wife surely played a part also.

After about 10 years I watched Jumper again. You know what pisses me off? The cocky pseudo-smart piano riff that plays whenever the film is particularly happy with itself. Like it thinks its Oceans 11.

I like the look of the film, and Billy Elliot is okay in it, I like how he got to keep his natural accent instead of doing a fake American one. But the way the film ends is poor and makes no sense. He's left everyone in grave danger (just like Griffin warned him) especially his Mum, and he doesn't seem to care!

It's one of those weird situations where I dismiss the obvious on the account of it being too obvious - even though it's actually correct.

His character developed just seemed too smooth I guess? I guess I'm used to them being a lot more complicated than this - even though I bet Godfather is the movie that started the whole "rise to power" story cliche and everybody else since then has just built on it.

Except, didn't Howard Hawks' Scarface also do that kind of story?

I went to see Avengers: Infinity War last night. I really enjoyed it, although I felt a bit like Cap at the end. The enormity of what had just happened was such an abstract thing to take in. Although the film took great pains to break it down to individual characters, some of them had so little to do the resonance was lost. Other than that, I felt it was a worthy crescendo to a ten years of what have been, in the main, a good set of films and world building. I'll be interested to see where the MCU goes from here. The good bits for me were the Guardians and Thor and Steve Rogers - I loved how Chris Evans played him with a lot less flair, in a quiet restrained way. That really stood out for me. Which is funny, because Cap couldn't have had more than half a dozen lines. The usual superhero pontificating of saving one life over billions of others utterly fell flat (especially given the likely civilian casualties already inflicted by this point) and was such a silly argument to be having in this context. Just for once, I'd like someone in one of these types of things to go "yes, you're right, you're no more important than anyone else." The other great thing about the film was Thanos being properly fleshed out and being an incredibly sympathetic guy and actually having a really good argument to drive his mission (although his methods were brutal and extreme, it's hard not to agree with his assessment that population growth left unchecked can be disastrous.). I really liked that, and stopped him being just another 'hi then die' bad guy. The CGI, when it focused on contained moments - fights and spaceships and all that - was great. Less so when you got into the leaping about stuff, which had that awful rubbery look about it. And there's a scene at the end where everyone standing about in a clearing looked really obviously greenscreened. It's a shame that these things are starting to be noticeable in films now. I don't know if it's because this happens when viewing a 3D print in 2D or just because they've pushed the fx too much or what, but everytime I spot the joins it takes me out of out the film. Boo. Overall - really good fun, although God knows what anyone coming cold to this film will make of it, as without at least some background on previous films, none of this will mean much.

Just saw Solo on Tuesday (half-off tix on Tues, which means the fam got cushy recliner seats for $6 each!).

It's solid, if unnecessary. The cast is enjoyable, plot is OK (heist-y) and there aren't any parts that drag. It's a good summertime action/sci-fi flick, but you're not going to leave the theater astounded. Being that it's Star Wars, it's fun to see on a big screen with the loud music and sound effects. Absolutely enjoyable for $6.

Watched Adieu Galaxy Express 999, the 1981 sequel to the movie that in turn was an adaptation of the manga.

The original movie is one of those few instances where I'd easily recommend the much shorter and compressed story presented by the film rather than the TV series, because the latter's highly episodic nature and almost complete lack of continuity means there's a lot of fat they could scoop out and not miss anything crucial. Amusingly, that movie was also made while the TV series was unfinished, so they had to make changes to the latter so as to present some level of surprise, and it seems every time this happens, such as it did in Mazinger Z vs Great General Darkness as opposed to the actual TV series finale which only aired three months after, the later version ends up coming across like a weak fart.

But anyway, the sequel is...not very good. An argument could be made for the original that Captain Harlock's presence is a bit random, but compared to Adieu he at least feels like a natural element of the story. Almost the entire story in this one consists of nothing but ridicilously convenient coincidences, Harlock and Emeraldas contribute so little to the plot you could've easily written them out and not miss anything, the villains are defeated by what is essentially a freak event and the auxiliary villain's relation to the protagonist swipes it's twist straight from Star Wars. The movie also presents a world that makes this sequel feel a bit like Alien 3, where the triumph and sacrifice of the characters from the last movie were essentially for nothing, and we get a good chunk in the middle of the movie where the story comes to a dead stop just so we can re-live the murder of the protagonist's mother from the first film.

And in despite of all this negativity on my behalf, it's still far from the worst, or even the least enjoyable, anime films I've ever seen. The theatrical level animation is very nice to look at, Rintaro's direction is excellent even though the script is rather weak, and if you're at all a sucker for melodrama, this movie has it in spades.

The Pawnbroker a dark tale of Sol, (played by Rod Steiger) an extremely cynical (bordering on nihilistic) Jewish Holocaust survivor trying to make a living in 60s Harlem as a Pawnbroker dealing with people he considers scum, including Brock Peters (who would later play Sisko's father on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as a local gangster who sells him stolen goods, while some of his customers are good people trying to talk to him various things, and his assistant considers him his teacher, all of them are trying to get him to reconnect to his humanity too bad he doesn't want to, or does he? If you want a film that will make you feel ambiguous then this one is it. Good performances all around.

The Old Dark House Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton, and Gloria Stewart star in James Whale's dark comedy of murder and mayhem. While no where near as great as Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. A couple traveling in Wales have car problems during a storm and seek shelter in a spooky old manor house with shall say we say eccentric residents including a 102 year old patriarch and mute and menacing butler played by Karloff. Worth a look for fans of the actors, James Whales, and the spooky murder mystery genre. It's been restored and it looks and sounds pretty good.
