I always liked the guys from Ifle 75 or whatever the band's called. Modest Mouse has a good song. Oh,Who are the guys who do vertigo? That song's awesome. Vertigo! ummm. Stacy's Mom Has Got It going On was funny and don't ask me why but I enjoyed it. Not a fan of Rap or Metal for that case. I like jazz 'cause I can play it.
EDIT:I added Stuff.

Punk music, movie soundtracks, comedy albums are a staple of my record collections. I have discovered that alot of good bands reside in other countries. Different music eras have more output than others, 1981-1984, etc... Nowadays bands exist in all corners of the world. Groups from Sweden like Asta Kask, & International Noise Conspiracy.
From Japan I have been collecting Balzac, & Hi-Standard. The European website can be found here; http://www.balzac-europe.com for Balzac. They're a horror punk band, hailed as the Japanese Misfits. Though the music does consist of industrial noise here and there, it's mainly just loud fast an guitar oriented, (not for the weak or elderly). Hi Standard is also from the far east. They have a collection of records out on http://www.fatwreck.com and they kinda sound like the Toy Dolls, except more punky. The Japanese hardcore that I find enjoyable would include Gism, and Lunacy.
Other bands that I find interesting: D.I. , Dickies, MxPx, Nerf Herder, Blink 182, Dropkick Murphys, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, The Honor System, The Broadways, Krupted Peasant Farmerz, Screeching Weasel

You should check out Scorpions, Dokken, and Danzig. Also any solo Ozzy material is good, Blizzard of Oz - Ultimate Sin.
I actually saw Danzig live about two weeks ago, and yes I know of the quality of Ozzy's solo stuff.
Forgot to add a couple bands:
Katakalysm
Trivium
Throwdown

Samhain goes back a couple of decades. They have a boxset that I want to get, covers a few Misfits tunes.
You mentioned Norma Jean, and I thought of Armor For Sleep's new album. I have been hearing good things about it. http://www.interpunk.com/

OK...
Dance music: DJ Boozy Woozy, Mauro Picotto, Mario Piu, Ricky Le Roy, Jan Wayne, Special D, Members of Mayday, Cosmic Gate, Tiesto, Faithless, Ferry Corsten, Floorfilla, Gigi D'Agostino, Juno Reactor, Kai Tracid, Kosheen, Public Domain, Voodoo & Serano.
Rap: Caddillac Tah, Ice Cube, Ja Rule
Rock/Metal/That Sort of Thing: AC/DC, Stereophonics, Rage Against The Machine, Rob Dougan, The Verve, REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, James, Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Queen.
Happy Hardcore: Almost anything, but my very favourites are Hixxy and Force & Styles.
My general music taste is definitely of the dance and happy hardcore variety. As for specifics of what I like in a song, the instruments are of utmost importance. If there are vocals, they have to gel with the instruments, so that the vocals effectively become another instrument. Lyrics aren't really very important at all.
