I grabbed a Power Rangers Legacy Green Ranger! I was only vaguely aware that this line even existed, so I was pretty surprised to see something like this on the shelves. And I've actually been looking around for a decent, inexpensive modern Green Ranger figure for a few years now, so it was an easy impulse buy.

I'm not a super-big Power Rangers fan -- I watched it for a brief while as a kid, but was more interested in toys of the monsters and mechs than the Rangers themselves. And honestly, I think the costume designs are samey and boring with the exception of Tommy here -- the gold chest armour and piping really brings the basic outfit to life. I can't see myself buying any of the other Rangers, at least until they get around to doing a White Ranger, but this figure is the one I definitely had to jump on.

Honestly, after playing with the thing it's probably for the best that I don't want to collect the whole team. It has the same basic articulation as a Marvel Legends figure (functionally, at least), and is about the same size, but quality-wise it's not up to that level. Joints are just a tiny bit loose all over, especially the hips, the ball-swivel wrists are unsightly and plastic looks kinda cheap up close. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination -- it's leagues better than any given Mattel figure, for one -- but I suppose Hasbro has spoiled me.

It's nice as a one-off oddity to add to my collection, but nowhere near good enough to convince me to spend the $150 or whatever it would take to collect the rest of the team in their less-interesting costumes.

(The same store had the Sandman-wave Legends in stock, but I was doing Christmas shopping and only had enough room to carry one figure, so I wasn't able to grab the couple I wanted. Shocker was honestly a bit of a disappointment, in package at least, but I certainly hope I run across a Symbiote Spidey again soon.)

A lay-by I picked up last week end.

Lego Nexo Knights 70320 Aaron Fox's Aero-Striker V2
Lego Nexo Knights 70319 Macy's Thunder Mace -
Bought from Big W during the Christmas toy sale.

Lego Creator 10254 Winter Holiday Train

LEGO Dimensions Level Pack Adventure Time
LEGO Dimensions Level Pack - Mission Impossible
LEGO Dimensions Level Pack - Sonic the Hedgehog
LEGO Dimensions Team Pack - Gremlins
LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack - The A-Team
LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack - Tina Goldstein

One big order I made from the Lego Shop@Home, interestingly the Dimensions sets were all given a very low price but not actually discounted, maybe a glitch or they decided to reduce the prices for a few weeks due to the teething issues with the game's software issues.

Got a whole bunch at once!

Some Kenner toys;
Man of Steel Superboy
Legends of Batman Crusader Batman
Legends of Batman Knightquest Batman

In spite of the confusing name, the "Crusader" Batman is the "regular" Batman of the line (ie. classic blue/grey and black costume) while Crusader Robin is some kind of a medieval knight. Likewise, Knightquest Batman is actually Knightfall Azrael - or rather, the pre-fall AzBats when he still had a regular cape to go with his Joe Quesada-designed costume. Crusader Batman gets two spring loaded gimmicks in the form of a missile launcher and a spring-loaded waist which allows him to throw punches, but the latter doesn't work so well, presumably because of having spent 22 years in packaging. AzBats' disc launcher works great, but his extreme pose makes balancing him a pain.

Superboy in the other hand is straight-up regular Superboy from the 90's, with his leather jacket and red gloves. Despite being from a comic book based line, his head sculpt looks a lot nicer than Forever Robin's. He's got an interesting variant of the usual "missile launcher" in the form of having a molded tab on his right arm which allows the spring-loaded gauntlets to snap directly onto his arm and fire by flicking them to the side slightly; it's a neat idea, but doesn't work that great in practice.

Lastly, SH Figuarts Road Sector, completing my Kamen Rider Black/Black RX lineup. Seems like a rule of thumb that if the Rider is a general release but the bike is an exclusive, the former isn't going to fit too well on the latter.

Got a Marvel Legends Punisher for Christmas! It's a good likeness with a good array of accessories, but a few little things take away from it for me.

First off, I love that it comes with two different heads. But the heads are stylized so differently that they don't even look like the same person, and that's a shame. The bandana head looks like Frank is "supposed to", according to my eye anyway, but the alternate head just looks like a random bleary-eyed psychopath. The jawline and cheekbones are just too different to be the same guy.

Another thing is that, as pretty much everyone who buys him will notice, the goddamn Punisher doesn't have "trigger finger" hands! As I understand it, Hasbro hasn't used them with this body mold before, and they probably didn't want do add any extra new tooling for a store exclusive, but it's still egregious considering who this is. It also raises the question of how they can do Machine Man, Cottonmouth and motherfucking Eel as mass releases but an A-lister like Frank here gets shuffled off to Walgreens because they couldn't find an assortment for him.

And then there's the things that only bug me because I actually know a bit about guns. So, Punisher's got a bazooka, which seems a bit like overkill considering the guy usually (as far as I know) only wants to kill his target, not any innocent bystander in a 50 foot radius, but whatever, it looks cool slung over his back at least. He's also got a neat-looking rifle. The problem is that said rifle is an M60 machine gun that's usually either vehicle-mounted or operated by a three-man team (a gunner, a spotter and an ammo mule). And while Frank is badass enough to go Arnie and handle it himself, it's belt-fed and the toy didn't come with an ammo belt, so he can't actually shoot anyone with it. Hasbro clearly knows that, too, since the toy has a molded slot for one (but sadly, it's the wrong size to use with the ammo belt that came with Cable). And the only other weapon choice he comes with is a drum-fed shotgun which would be awesome if it wasn't bizarrely painted white. As if to rub things in, he's got spare ammo molded onto his belt...six pouches for assault rifle clips that he can't use, and a dozen pistol rounds and a couple magazines for the handgun he doesn't come with. I don't know if it's a case where whoever chose the accessories didn't know enough to match them to the belt tooling (or vice versa) or just a case of them having a very limited selection of guns to choose from. Given that he shares two guns with Deadpool, I'd guess the latter. And it's hardly a deal-breaker, just a bit of a head-scratcher.

Altogether it's a good toy, but not as good as it could have been with a tad more thought. Folks who don't know enough about guns to notice the inconsistencies would probably be happy with everything but the lack of trigger finger hands.

Sounds like I'm better off sticking with my ML4 Punisher still.

Not a christmas present but I did get the last toy I bought this month (and probably year); Superboy VTOL Cycle by Kenner.

The Greek guy was selling for 15 dollars but he accepted my offer of 10 dollars, which made me think 1) whatever happened to the fine art of haggling, and 2) I wish I'd offered even less to see how low he'd go.

The box was opened but the toy itself was apparently unused, which meant I got to stick the single decal on (a silver Superman shield) myself...as well as discover that once you plug the handlebars in, they're in for good. Whoops. Considering this thing was made specifically for Superboy, you'd think he'd fit on the bike a little better, but you really do have to bend the handlebars to fit them in his hands, and the harness/seatbelt doesn't fit on quite as well you'd think. Still, a neat addition, and I like that the winch for the grappling hook rope is designed to not hinder the spring-loaded firing mechanism, even if it means it does slip off even when it's not supposed to.

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD

;)

Anyway I just got the Sandman wave (Huzzah? Let's find out!)

Teh Green Goblin is pretty much what you'd expect them to do from the already excellent Hobgoblin figure. New head, no cloak, yadda yadda. The plastic of the glider's got an ugly swirl right at the front, but the new effects on the pumpkin bomb are cool. Could have done with an alternate head, or at least to not have been packed with two heads from his cousin(?) with the same hairstyle...

Shocker is... alright? Could do with something to break up the colour scheme in the body. The expression on his face is ace, and Hasbro just throwing those energy effect pieces in with everybody is ****ing hilarious. It's nice to have Shocker, but it would have been nicer to have a better Shocker...

The Jackal is blatantly going to be one of the shelfwarmers from this wave. Even with The Clone Conspiracy arc happening right now (and being ****ing awesome), it's the Jackal for ****'s sake. Which is a shame because it's actually a surprisingly good figure. Nice fur scuplting, a great head and some excellent detailing/paintwork on the clawed hands/feet.

Kamala Khan's an ace little figure too. She makes the most sense in a Spider-Man assortment given the connection to Miles, rather than waiting for whenever a Captain Marvel wave might turn up. The lack of double-jointed elbows isn't so much of an issue here, as the forearms are interchangeable so that would probably have ****ed up the gimmick. Flat feet too, which is always nice to see on the female figures. Cool headsculpt with some nice detailing. Very nice.

The new Spider-Man 2099 looks sleek and awesome. I'm behind on his book so I don't know the story with Miguel's new costume and can't judge the accuracy, but it looks good. There's a lot of fiddly detailing and paint apps here which probably explain the lack of interchangeable hands or accessories - probably got the paint budget saved from having black costume Spidey here. He's got the butterfly shoulders, but I don't think the torso is the same as the standard Spidey - it's bulkier. Haven't done any comparisons outside this assortment yet, but it's nice if they're bringing that gimmick into other bucks.

Spider-UK (sorry - "Marvel's Spider-UK" to presumably distinguish from all the other characters with that name, or because they've not got the trademark right yet) is also cool. Okay it's the lazy repaint in the wave - fairly generic body (no butterfly joints), plain blue legs, no other parts, etc. But it's the Captain Britain Corps Spidey from Spider-Verse, so that in itself is ****ing excellent. The plastic has sprue-mark bruising on the biceps and forearms and there's some paint chips on the back of the body, but other than that he's good for what the toy is.

Black Costume Spider-Man is the usual Spidey figure in the colour scheme you're expecting. We all know what we're getting here by now, right? The white paint on the spider logo is a bit spotty. There are no webslingy hands (just fists and the grasping hands). The head is the one with the oversized eyes from the SDCC Raft set.

Aaaand the Sandman BAF. Oh. The body and legs are (I think) from the Absorbing Man figure. The belt's a separate piece but not loose enough to flop around. The sand effect arms are phenomenal pieces of sculpting, and both heads are great...

BUT... there's joint tolerance issues. Actually the joints across this entire wave are really stiff. Not entirely sure what's going on there, but I've noticed it on all the figures, but it's only here that it becomes a serious issue. Because the head and the left arm are the only parts that will peg in properly and hold firm. The legs and right arm... nah. The best they'll do is just sort of sit there - no firm final click. Or at least not yet. There's probably a heat-manipulation trick that'll do it, but the point is there shouldn't need to be.

The tight joints mean you can get those comedy oversized sand arms to stay up in whatever position you want. But there's nothing to counterbalance the weight of them... and with the legs not pegging in properly, it seriously limits any attempt to pose him so that it's distributed sensibly. Sad face. All in all it should be a superb figure, but it's let down by the fact it won't ****ing stay together.

... and in my final attempt to get it to plug together, while writing this, the ****ing peg's snapped off inside the right leg. Faaaantastic. Gonna need some glue...

Star Wars 3.75" Rogue One K-2SO and Sergeant Jyn Erso (Eadu)

I was idly looking around for K-2SO online last night and was balking the prices he's selling for. My local Asda have all Star Wars 3.75" figures reduced at the moment, so picked up him and another Jyn for a £5er each whilst doing the shop. The packages are so nice I'm not sure I can bring myself to open them. Sigh. Might have to find my scalpel and carefully open these as I like the packaging design and artwork as much as the figures. Have to say, the likenesses at this small scale are very impressive! Detailing is good. Bit puzzled by the Black Series releases at this scale, which just leave out the launchers and whatnot but charge you twice the price of the regular retail figures for the sake of having the same toy in a black box. I don't get it.

Star Wars Disney Elite Series 6" Jyn Erso, Star Wars Black Series 5" Jyn Erso and Star Wars 3.75" Cassian Andor (Eadu)

I heart Jyn Erso. She is my new favourite fictional character. So I felt compelled to pick up two more figures of her and online reviews weren't much help in making a decision on which one of the larger toys to go for (that isn't one of those slightly frightening doofy huge figs or some Hot Toys 'thats cool, but how much?!'), so I got both. I think the Disney one has the better face sculpt, which is kind of vacant and cheery looking, and the Die Cast gives it a pleasing heft. The Hasbro Black Series wins out on articulation and having a better body. And I got a little Cassian in his winter woolies in the proper Star Wars scale. I like the zip line he comes with - thats cool. Better than some silly missile launcher thingy.

It all boils down to the articulation. The 'regular' line that goes for $7-8 USD typically runs what they call '5POA' meaning 5 Points of Articulation. They're basic figures with fun little weapons (at least the Rogue One figures do, the TFA figures came with nonsensical Build-A-Weapon pieces). The Black Series is more aimed at long-time collectors with ~15 POA. You're right about the likenesses - they are so good on the cheaper figures, it's hard to shell out $15 USD for a Black Series 3.75" figure. On top of that, Wal-Mart regularly discounts the 6" figures to ~$17 USD.

Personally I now prefer the 6" scale for the price, and I was a 3.75" collector quite some years ago.

Lego DC Superheroes Scarecrow's Harvest Of Fear

A Lego set that hits two of my favourite themes in one go : Farming and Batman. Currently reduced from the excessive RRP on Amazon (no doubt ahead of the glut of Batman Movie sets that are about to hit), this put something I've wanted for a while in my price range and it doesn't disappoint. For your money you get three vehicles - Batcopter, a modified Combine Harvester and an old-school Tractor. Set comes with 5 Minifigures - Batman, Scarecrow, Killer Moth, Blue Beetle and a terrified Farmer.

The Batcopter is probably my least favourite thing here. It's a good toy and has a nice action feature, but is very bulky and has an incredibly wibbly rotor. This is brick built and has to have 2 and a bit bricks' clearance so the tail doesn't get jammed up in the rotors when you use the action feature - pushing the tail in makes two dual stud-shooter cannons pop out the sides. The weight of the rotors makes it wobble about, which is a shame. Aesthetically, its kind of chunky and blocky, so despite being a fun toy, it doesn't look very good.

Scarecrow's combiner harvester, on the other hand, is excellent. It's a smaller build than the old City one from 2009, but has an excellent action feature - a small gear system causes the front blades to rotate! A simple thing, but very effective and good for play. Speaking of play, there's a pod on the back that can flip open to capture an unwilling victim to be exposed to a heavy dose of the Scarecrow's neuro-toxin. I like that this is on heavy ratchets so it doesn't flop around when its lying horizontally, and that when you put it upright it just flips open so your victim can just be callously dumped (probably in the fetal position jibbering about their worst fears). The stud shooter on the front shoots canisters of fear gas, which makes for a nice change and actually makes me enjoy the stud shooter feature for once, as there's a greater chance of finding these things once they've been shot off. The light tan and brown livery is excellent and the luminous lime green used for the fear canisters and engine detail fit well. There's a little bit of forward rake to the thing, with the rear wheels being set slightly higher which makes this look like the aggressive custom job it really is. Scarecrow can comfortably sit in the driver's seat and there's a clip for his pitchfork on the side.

The little red tractor is also a surprise hit. I wasn't expecting much of this, but its a great little build and uses a surprising amount of parts and would make for a good stand alone Creator set - it's that good. There's some nice detailing with the exhaust stack, lamp and mis-matched body work to play up the slightly vintage nature of this design.

The Minifigure selection is good, with Scarecrow looking suitably fearsome and Batman looking cool with his rebreather and green eyes. The panicked Farmer is cute (love his stained vest and hinted- at paunch) and whilst Killer Moth and Blue Beetle are nice to have, they do feel a bit superfluous. Uber-nerds will get more out these guys than I will.

Personally, I think the set would have been strong enough to live without the inclusion of the Batcopter (or, if it did have to be thrown in, why not make it one of those lighter ones with crop sprayers, to keep in with agricultural theme?) and the two minor superheroes. This would also have helped keep the RRP down, although I do see the appeal of making a full on playset with a good vs evil theme. Problem with this though is it instantly jacks up the price. I think Lego need to be making the DC theme a bit more accessible and going for more of the £20 price point that does well for the Marvel theme. I suppose Marvel's more recognisible stable of characters makes this easier to do than for DC though, where outside of the Justice League, you're pretty much straight onto D list characters only fanboys know about.

I'm afraid to take him out of his box right now as I don't have a permanent home for him and I'm afraid to lose his little arrow.

A Disney plush! A Lion King one! And it's...one of the hyenas.

Okay, I actually saw the movies in the theaters but I never got any toys then - come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw any - and the prices on Disney plush toys being what they are, getting any now would be costly, so I settled for one from that new TV show. It's close enough!
