How well the Bay stuff will stand up in years to come is hard to say as it's hardly universally loved now, but ILM are usually pretty good at making things that stand the test of time. Compare their effects work on the Trek films to any of the ones they didn't work on for starts. Have you watched &...

How was the Hollywood blockbuster fantasy film subgenre before Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings came along? I remember not caring for fantasy films period before it, that they didn't really make very many to begin with, but now there's too damn many of them. As a kid I had stuff like "Willow&q...

I think the first "Saw" is a good self-contained horror movie, though a bit too close to the "pseudo-snuff" genre for its own good (never as bad as "Hostel" or any given "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" sequel, but still close). The sequels are probably the worst thi...

He also does pretty well with a completely thankless role as a nice white guy in Glory... But usually he's just the best thing in bad films (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Days of Thunder etc.). He's so good in Dracula you can actually forget the obvious "Shit, we'd better have an American" casti...

If you've got to be typecast you could do a lot worse than he did, that's for sure. I'm kinda curious which other good movies he's been in other than The Princess Bride, though. Well, he provided a pretty perfect voiceover in the English dub of "The Cat Returns" costarring Peter Boyle and...

EDIT: I like Annie Hall, and Manhattan... I don't think they're superb, but they're alright... With Manhattan it's the score and the cinematography that does most of the work, though - all films should look and sound like that. Yeah, I can agree with you on that. I just think Woody Allen would have...

And speaking of Mel Brooks and overrated...Mel Brooks is overrated. Every movie he makes tries to be a witty parody of something (genre convention, racism, etc...), a surreal farce and a juvenile romp full of dick jokes and fart noises all at once, and never manages to do as good a job of any of it...

@Dr. Spengler: I think Close Encounters is a good film. Definitely worth a watch and addictive in its way, like the first Jaws film. Its not mushy, hasn't been overly pastiched since (there's one or two obvious ones out there), and it made me want to watch all the way through to the end. Oh yeah, I...

I'm going to have to say "E.T." I never watched it as a kid and most of the people I've met who adore it do so out of fond childhood memories. I don't have that nostalgic attachment, so when I watch it now, all I see are terribly saccarine kids and bad special effects. It probably doesn't ...

I was still in high school when I first joined, so yeah, I was pretty much an ignorant dumbass when I started out in the wide world of Transformers forums. I'm pretty embarassed by a few of the really stupid, offensive things I posted back in '01-03, a few posts of which are saved for posterity in t...

Here's something you may not have seen before, Cliffy: http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77022&st=0 1985 Toyfair Tonka Catalog with a big emphasis on the GoBots. Not too well aversed with the toys, myself, but there seems to be some interesting variants in there according to the...

EDIT: And according to the Allspark thread this service is bare bones minimimum stuff, on DVD-R's with no menus or restoration. So it might not actually be much better than the bootlegs... Yeah, I've bought a few of the Warner Archives releases in the past. While the no menus or special features or...

My only familiarity with that particular deleted scene is from the manga adaptation where it was included for some reason. Now that you mention the context behind Biggs's words to Luke, though, you can kinda tell that some dialogue seems to be missing. Here's how the exchange goes in the manga: &quo...

I think Luke was planning to sign up for some non-rebel related academy? Possibly even the one that leads into the Empire space service (in the radio adaptation version of the deleted scenes with Biggs it's clear he's only signing up for the academy so he can quickly jump ship and join the Rebellio...

I dunno, at the beginning of the movie, when Luke is talking to Uncle Owen, he mentions wanting to apply to some academy to join the Rebellion; the same academy Biggs apparently went to, I think. So I guess the Rebellion has its own military academy with recruiting stations taking applications and w...

Indeed. F.W. Murnau's "Faust" is one of the most extreem examples of that. they would often shaft some of the lesser foreign markets with the REALLY bad takes and cuts that had actors tripping or missing their marks or even stagehands visable in the background (or if it was a special effec...
