Optimus lying to Sam about their plan is absolutely believable. He wants there to be zero chance that anyone catches on to their plan, and besides, Sam (in Optimus' mind) won't be affected by the lie apart from the 24 hours of grief he'll suffer through.

While I liked DotM a lot, it's probably more culpable than either of the other two for just trying to rush illogical things past the audience...
