Website Compatibility Question

Post by secretcode »

Is the site having issues with formatting lately, or is it just the browser I'm currently using (Internet Explorer 8, which can be easily solved by the user by clicking that "broken page" icon next to the refresh)?

This branch of vBulletin (and indeed large chunks of the web) probably has all sort of issues with IE8, being as it pre-dates it. Updates are pencilled in for around Easter when I'm probably taking some time off work.

It may be a result of vB developers having had to add workarounds to achieve rendering in IE6/7. In short, Microsoft calling anything broken is taking the piss. They're the primary reason the web is broken.

I'd still recommend people avoid Internet Explorer like plague.

Well, not all that much of what I'd intended got done, but I've cut the workaround in the template that the developers seem to have added for IE6. Lines shouldn't overlap now. Lemme know if anything else that affects readability shows up.

Oh wow. I see what you did. Very cool.

So is vBulletin a more stable system than, say, InvisonFree?

Well, for starters, Invision Free is a hosted system, isn't it? Have you found it unreliable? That may be more down to the free hosting than the software.

If I was starting a site and had need for anything more than quick brutish hacks on top of phpBB, I'd probably consider the pay version of Invision -- IIRC it has favourable non-subscription licensing, though it'd warrant careful research on the security record. Feature set seems good from a user point of view.

Eh, the hosting is a bit crap. I just have issues with coding stuff, such as announcement tickers at the bottom (near the chat box on the forum- also where the majority of the activity is.) without them going along side the chat or the featured image.

Not seeing anything, even on the browser I don't have AdBlock and FlashBlock installed on.

If it's the "MACHINIMA PREVIEW COMIC WILL RETURN ON APRIL 29TH." that'd be a tagline rather than a ticker, and you just need to whack one or more
tags before it, or <p>enclose the text in paragraph tags.</p>
