[3D printers] Are we going to be seeing a whole lot more fan projects in a few years?

Figures, collectables, customs and collecting.

"Here's a little doll of grandma when she was 20"... I can't decide if that's creepy or not.

I wonder how long it's going to take before someone uses it to make copies of their junk?

Edit: Decided it's cool. Unless the little doll of grandma is nude. Then it's creepy.

Since the tech for 3D scanners is dropping rapidly in cost, probably not long before we see more DIY busts / sex toys / low run copyright infringement...

But yeah, 3D objects rather than photo albums? That's kind of cool. Although the next step of, eg, action figures of family members on a desk rather than photos possibly being commonplace is getting into weird territory.

That was quick.

new 3-D printer that will supposedly sell for less than $100 (USD I think), made using open-source tech:

I like that these are already being used to make guns.

Hooray for 'the right to bear arms'.

These remind me of the makers used in Transmetropolitan...we're surely not far away from a machine that can make you anything.

I'm amazed they can get any kind of useful output from the average soundcard... and the approach in general is fascinating. Seriously one to watch.

This'd be a neat alternative to video reviews.

Definitely working for me. Anyway, something that Shapeways are doing now is what they refer to as "coloured sandstone" which could be politely described as a transitional stage in getting towards what everyone wants -- being able to produce stuff equivalent to moulded plastic parts without a lot of post-production.

http://www.shapeways.com/materials/full-color-sandstone

Sandstone is the only material capable of full-color 3D prints. Produced on Z-Corp printers, it is perfect for figurines, life-like models, avatars, and other products that lend themselves to colorful, high-quality printing. Models are created by printing binder material and colored ink layer-by-layer into a bed of gypsum-based powder. After printing, the models are finished with a cyanoacrylate (super glue) sealant to ensure durability and vivid colors. The final product is a hard, brittle material that works great for figurines and visual models, but isn't well suited to functional parts or daily handing. Models should be handled carefully, and not exposed to water as it will cause fading.

I... might actually have to get one of those. There are variety of minor parts and simple shapes I'd like to make in Sketchup and have printed, but shapeways is too slow and costly to do multiple iterations of the same thing until you get the fitting right.

It's a slick demo and the larger prints shown look nice, but I'd like to see more close-up outputs. I'll eventually jump on something like this once I've got some more solid ideas and/or interesting existing designs other people have put together to play with and tweak.

They seem pretty upfront.

“Its really just a hot glue gun moving around some rails, it’s not that complicated a machine,” Matt explained. “If you’re going to try to make it a consumer product you have to design it like one. We’ve seen a number of other 3D printers, even the consumer ones which are still very complicated machines so really the price was the goal but the way we went about it was by reducing the complexity.”
