Power Rangers Lightning Collection Ranger Slayer
Saw this while looking through Comics And Cocktails website and thought it looked absolutely awesome. It was on clearance as the small blaster accessory is missing, and was an absolute bargain. Love the figure; it's got a dynamite mix of pink, black, silver and white. Comes with a bow and some arrows/ blast effect thingy in electric pink. Great stuff! Hasbro: til all are one!

Marvel Legends Iron Man 2020
Something of an anachronism these days, but like many Marvel UK fans, Arno Stark has some resonance for me. The figure is excellent. I love the deep burgundy and gold armour, it looks fantastic. The goofy cog shoulder designs make this 'future' version of Iron Man are great, as are the weird gears on his hips. It's funny these design choices scream '50s Sci-Fi rather than future tech, but the characgter wouldn't look right without them. Although I can do without blast effects, these ones are nice - a bunch of repulsor blasts for his hands and some excellent ones you can assemble and plug into his feet to make him look like he's blasting off! Fantastic. I also picked up the Omnibus collection that pulls together the Machine Man mini-series, an Amazing Spider-Man Annual story I didn't know about, his appearance in Death's Head's comic, the '90s Graphic Novel and an appearance in some mid 2000s Amazing Fantasy style anthology. Decent stories, but nothing to blow you away. I do like how selfish Arno is and it would have been nice to see Marvel steer him more towards being a mercenary than the regular super hero hinted at here.

Marvel Legends Fan Vote 2020 Silk
Just a reissue of a figure that came out in 2016, but with extra hands and whatnot. Has a stronger print than the 2016 version, but only on the front. For no doubt budgetary reasons, Hasbro didn't want to spend money on expensive back printing on a quick cash-grab reissue. Not that I mind, because she's ace. And a surprising find on the shelves of hmv, along with all the Wanda Vision Marvel Legends. And MODOK (whyyyy?). Figure is super posable, looks great and comes with a Mask up/ Mask down head. I like that her mask up version chimes neatly with the times!

If anyone else is following Origins or Masterverse there were tons of reveals from Power-Con this weekend;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOZs28vVcgY

The sort of reveals TF fandom would be frothing about if Hasbro made the equivalent.

Or there's Pixel Dan's walk-around with some of the stuff at booths;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFyFcIAKnoc

(This is a memo to myself if you can't tell, but curious if anyone else *is* following the lines? I'm surprised Masterverse is getting so much product, assume Revelation viewing success is translating into toy sales for the more Classics-style figures too.)

Masters Of The Universe Origins Jamboree
I'd been trying really hard to resist these as I really don't need to be cluttering up what little space I have with more guff, but a saw a bunch on sale and couldn't resist. These are smartly marketed as 'Retro Play' with modern articulation and they are really. really nice. The plastics are perhaps a bit more spongy than the 1980s originals and they are a bit like a Transformers fans wet dream - its the original figures with no easily perishable 'o' ring waist and with elbow, knee, wrist and ankle articulation - but they are such good fun (I do miss the 'thunder-punch' feature though)!

I picked up Skeletor and he's just as goofy as I remember the original being. I had owned the original as an 'adult collector', but he was missing his weapons, so it's nice to have him with all his gear. The havoc staff is ace and my favourite. Would have liked another closed fist so he can also wield his sword (sadly, he has no sheath thing on the back of his armour to tuck his sword into), but otherwise, yeah he's great. All mad red eyes and that weird mix of green on a yellow skull.

I got him Panthor to ride around on, because I've always liked the look of Panthor and never owned one. Doesn't have the flocked fur covering of the original, but I like the sculpted fur. He does have articulated legs, but lacking ankle movement rather nixes much use of the articulation he does have. Nevermind, still looks bloody ace.

Evil Lyn is in desperate need of a liver transplant, having one of the worst cases of jaundice I've ever seen. No wonder she looks unhappy. I like her evil leotard, head dress with a skull on it and ball on a stick. She looks awesome and I like the mad colours of the toy over the fleshy animation look. Nice.

Beast Man was one I can distinctly remember having growing up. He's a bit of an ugly looking brute, all clown like face with nostrils and teeth making up most of his face. The orange on this new version is positively neon, which takes a bit of getting used to. The blue paint app on his furry jerkin is a bit crap - its a splodgy mess on the medallion or whatever it is he has on his chest. The whip is still an odd thing - it looks like a loud hailer with a bit of string on.

He-Man is a big overblown mess of steroids who looks as constipated now as he did in 1983. Must dye his hair, with those black eyebrows. I also wonder if the furry pants are a bit itchy. Love that he comes with his axe and shield (which I always preferred over the power sword. Or is that Power Sword?), and that these can all be clipped together along with the power sword for tidy storage times. Speaking of the Power Sword, this is a new version and it's done up in silver, which is nice, but you can't do the whole clipping He-Man's half to Skeletor's half thing, which is a shame. But I'll live.

As with Skeletor, I got He-Man Battle Cat to ride around on. This makes me feel proper nostalgic as I used to have these two as a young 'un and they look just as cool now as they did back then. Battle Cat has the same articulation as Panthor so there's nothing majorly exciting going on there. Paint work is nice and you can pop the armour off for Cringer mode, if you like.

These are all kinds of silly fun and I love them. A weird play feature of the action figures is that you can pop the limbs off and swap them around, Hero-Mashers style, which is a bit mad. I won't be doing that, but it might make for some grisly diaoramas, if you're into that.

The figures also come with pack in comics, like in the old days. Although I think (judging by what I've bought), you just get the same one in each wave. In a work of genius, they feature no dialogue, getting around the multi-lingual thing, which is cool. And they're fun!

Have to say I find the lack of text in the comics extremely annoying personally. They could have distributed the US versions (with captions on the cards as well as text in the comics) over here and it would've sold better. Kids need stories and bios to connect with.

IIRC the 80s Beast Man whip was originally from a larger scale figure and had a handle added on the side. BTW, apparently the Flying Fists He-Man and Terror Claws Skeletor will have the waist spring.

I've gone fairly all-in with Origins, including messing around with customising. They're fun and mostly quick and easy to do, with a bit of boiling water or cutting or painting or acetone on the standard deco figures. Will take more photos eventually, probably when they get to an official Randor and I've got the bigger display a bit more fleshed out and as I want it.

https://imgur.com/a/fZ3QPyf

The first vignette on my key shelf is all I was intending to collect initially, versions of characters who appeared in the mini-comic story The Search for Keldor (or didn't appear in the case of the King's brother). The stuff across the top of the shelves is what I've been messing around with since. There are a few vintage figures there to pad out factions who haven't had (m)any releases yet, but mainly a mix of modern Origins/WWEternia, Classics and Super7/Funko figures and parts. I need to get around to finishing some paint apps on certain ones like the NA He-Man and Skeletor and putting some dye on that Spikor body. And I want to do a Disco Skeletor at some point.

Dollar General has 20% LEGO this weekend. I got:

31113 Race Car Transportation - The two F1 racers are cute. The transport truck less so, but it comes with some interesting pieces, including some triangular tiles. They're isosceles right triangles, with the two shorter sides each being two studs long. You place two hypotenuse to hypotenuse and it's a complete 2x2 tile in two different colors. I have no interest in the boat and crane truck alternate builds.

31088 Deep Sea Creatures - I do have interest in one of the alternate builds here. I actually own this set already. I built the squid and angler fish before making the shark, which I still have. This was cheap enough to double dip so I can have the angler fish, too. Plus, the extra pieces include a lot with studs on the side, which always come in handy.

76171 Miles Morales Mech Armor - I only know the character from Into the Spiderverse. The fingers are articulated enough for a thwip pose, and it comes with translucent blue webbing that can be wielded by either the mech or the minifig. There's an extra of the special piece the minifig uses to hold the webbing, which I'll probably find a use for in another minifig.

31102 Fire Dragon - This was a sale at Michael's, a craft store that carries some LEGO. Lots of curved blue tiles I've never seen before. These aren't circles, or parts of circles; they're what's left when a circle is removed. The treasure chest looks to be brick build instead of the standard LEGO treasure chest, which I already own in abundance.

I have to admit, He-Man was literally the last 80s property I'd have expected to find success again. But I'm happy to see that I was wrong. There's retro figures, more modern stuff, even building kits I think? Is it just fogeys like us that are buying the stuff, or are kids into it too?

I had a fuckton of the figures as a kid but don't recall ever actually getting more than a couple of them, so I think they must have been hand-me-downs from older cousins. I think I was a couple years too young to be in that particular target demographic. Pretty much all of them wound up trashed thanks to burst O-rings or the like, but my little boy has a Battle Cat and Panthor (and maybe King Hiss?) in one of his toy boxes along with a few really beat up Super Powers toys. Oh, and I made a point of keeping Stinkor all these years. Mostly to annoy my mother, who wanted to bury him in the yard when she realized he actually stank. I took it out every few years when she was still alive just to reassure her that I still had it and it still reeked. :)

Is the Castle Greyskull I've been seeing around a new design, or a reissue of the 80s playset? I was stunned by how cheap it was going for, considering how much Hasbro charges for a similar-sized Transformer these days. The original Greyskull and Snake Mountain were two of my favourite toys as a kid...used them as playsets with almost anything.

I'd love to get a modern Skeletor, though I really have no idea what the options are.

I think Origins sales are heavily driven by parents remembering the line, although a lot of the old shows are on official YouTube channels. An industry rule of the thumb is eighty percent of sales need to move through general retail channels with kid product so it seems to be doing well, cited in Mattel earnings, etc. Despite pandemic and other distribution issues.

It remains to be seen how much sales of Revelation Masterverse and Netflix CGI tie in toys cannibalise Origins sales.

You can get replacement leg bands for vintage figures quite easily on eBay. Grayskull is a new mould and considering it comes with a figure is pretty reasonable for the asking price, although a lot of the price of Transformers is part count and assembly costs. Your options for Skeletors are pretty broad -- if you like vintage style, the standard Origins ones are a separate SKU to the other retail waves with the intention being to keep He-Man and Skeletor available. Most on the shelves now are probably the refreshed designs which have more vintage style heads.

The new Stinkor apparently only has a slight odor, which I imagine most people are secretly relieved by but can be topped up with patchouli oil. Just bear in mind essential oils are toxic and some can dissolve plastic. I think there were non hoax stories in the 80s about the mix used making factory workers ill.

I was a bit late to MOTU and remember the later figures better, plus there was more to remember because later figures mostly had more investment in action features on the back of the success of the brand. Don't hugely regret moving on from that and Thundercats to Transformers, though. I do miss the waist swivel on Origins but apparently at least a couple of upcoming figures will have it. And the easy customisation is great for creative sorts, young or old.

You can also get O-rings in the plumbing section of hardware stores. I got a 10-pack at Home Depot for less than US$2 to fix up my Visionaries. There's some trial and error to get the right size, but they're cheap enough to experiment with.

My evil Visionary leader was the first to go. I found a replacement in a comic shop for US$10. Then, I made the mistake of putting them on a shelf right under a forced air heating vent. A few months later, the O-rings that had held up for 20+ years had failed. The first pack of O-rings I bought was too small, so I overstretched them and they broke quickly. I went up a size, and they've held up pretty well since then.

For display you can do MOTU figures with O rings looped through the waist piece and small screw in hooks, but probably best not for anything that kids handle.

A non-MOTU quick custom... some people might remember Vincent Price playing a version of himself in various Scooby Doo series as Vincent van Ghoul. I got a loose non-Cumberbatch Dr Strange head from an eBay seller ages ago after noticing the resemblance (which is something a lot of people have commented on) and kept a look out for a cheap close enough body. I forget where the spare hands came from (they're not that pale, it's the light) but the body's a Bendyfigs Dracula, and "vampire" is more or less where the rest of the VvG parody look comes from when he wasn't being written as a robed sorcerer.
