I've spent the last few months watching Danger Man. I'd not seen the half hour episodes before, and they were good fun (though any chance of the series escaping the shadow of its successor is buggered right from the off by the very first scene of the very first episode having Peter Swanwick in it).

It was just a preamble to watching The Prisoner on Blu Ray though. It looks fantastic, Portmerion is just a beautifully bonkers place perfectly made for HD. Of course, that means the studio exteriors built in the episodes with no Welsh filming are going to look terrible but thems the breaks.

I really want a charcoal suit like Number 6's civilian clothing as well.

just watched Starship Troopers: Invasion animated movie since io9 had been plugging it as 'possibly the best and only true sequel to the original movie'. um... no.

it was entertaining enough as a thing unto itself, even if the ending had multiple moments of head-scratching stupidity, but what really irked me was that the three leads from the first movie looked NOTHING like their real-life counterparts, despite the fact that one of them was an exec producer.

still, it was a thing, and i watched it.

also recently rewatched the original Starship Troopers (as a preamble to the above) and robocop. both of which i haven't seen in years, so that was a goodly amount of paol verhoven fun. I suppose i shouldn't have been as suprised as i was to find that there were similar themes running through both, and that they go well together back-to-back. fairly certain they use the same music in both lol.

i was entirely unimpressed by robocop 2.

tl:dr originals: good, sequels: not so much

Not a DVD purchase, but we're one episode away from finishing up Arrested Development on Netflix. My goodness, that was a funny show. Nice blend of subtle, cerebral stuff and over-the-top zaniness. I hear tell that they're getting ready to revive the show as a Netflix-only exclusive. Hopefully they don't ruin it.

I haven't bought DVD's in such a long time. We have a huge cabinet of them that we never watch (I like to watch movies, but my wife never wants to devote the time to a 2 hr movie starting at 9:30 at night). I think the last thing I got was Transformers: Dark of the Moon on Blu-Ray a couple months back. Before that it was Smallville Season 10 for Christmas last year. I think the next couple things will be Dark Knight Rises on Blu-Ray whenever it makes it out.

Most of the time we just rent from Redbox now. You can't beat it at ~$1.50 per rental!

The last volume of Dragon Ball Z Kai, the American Piecollection, or at least the collection that includes the four main movies and NCIS season 9 I think.

Found the Lost In Time 3-disc set covering the Hartnell and Troughton eras. I've been wanting to see The Crusade ever since I read the book. Same with The Moonbase(why the called the book Doctor Who and the Cybermen never made sense). I'm still waiting to see all of them, but what little I've seen looked good, although it has to be said the the actual moonbase looked kind of cramped.

And I think I'm falling in love with Polly.....

Because Target were more concerned with selling books to kids than fidelity to the TV show and the promise of everyone's second favourite monster is a more exciting title than plain old Moonbase is.

Just watched North Sea Hijack. Fairly standard almost TV Movie thriller hugely enlivened by Roger Moore going hugely OTT with his attempt to play a character with as many un-Bond quirks as possible (he as a beard! Hates women! Drinks scotch from the bottle! Says "Bloody" every other word! Loves cats and embroidery!). All to no effect as he still comes across as Bond with a beard.

Though that isn't helped by the cast being full of actors from Bond (George Baker and David Heddison) and a scene with a female Prime Minister verging on For Your Eyes Only territory.

At Cliffy's recommendation I've watched 1970's boat based bomb movie Juggernaut (or Terror on the Britanic as the DVD insists on calling it).

Unfortunately it's an MGM DVD from the early 2000's of the same vintage as the Niven Casino Royale disc I just got rid of (to Cliffy oddly enough) for the Blu Ray. Meaning a pan and scan print of a widescreen film like it's VHS and really tinny sound. Which is a shame because being mostly filmed on a real cruise ship in real bad weather I suspect a decent print would look fantastic.

Still a good fun film though, you can't go wrong with Roy Kinnear and it's nice to see Sheriff Pepper from Live and Let Die play someone who is smart and not a cop for once. A nice eclectic cast as well, I especially loved the blink and miss it appearances from Kenneth Cope and Gareth Thomas.

Despite being played by Freddy Jones the reveal of who the terrorist is was a bit of a damp squib though. Partly because he's only in it for the last ten minutes but mainly because I kept expecting Tony Hopkins to turn out to be behind it. Seriously, he looks amazingly evil as he waves his wife and kids off at the start...

Yeh, the Juggernaut reveal is the only bad thing because on the one hand it's making a statement on the banality of criminals but it's pitched like it's meant to be a big dramatic supervillain reveal.

Still the cultiest cast ever - Kinnear, Thomas, Hemmings, Harris, Roshan Seth (Art Malik V1), Holm, James, Julian Glover, Jack Watson, Tom Chadbon, Michael Melia...

Tip-top film - British Irving Allen. Omar Sharif on a cruiseliner, it rains the whole time, the bomb disposal squad wear the thickest jumpers known to mankind, "I might be stupid but I'm not bloody stupid", David Hemmings falls asleep in practically every scene, repulsive suitcases, the bridge crew betting on who the captain's going to pull.

I must have missed Chadbon. Julian Glover is a completely thankless supporting role got a sqwee out of me though.

I think he always is in films - he's one of those weird actors big enough to be a Special Guest Star on TV but is just a jobbing face/safe professional in films.

Being the single dullest Bond villain of all time is probably his cinema highlight isn't it? Shame.

I may give Wild Geese a go as, despite not really being into war films, I am on a Moore kick at the moment. The Man Who Haunted Himself is probably going to be my next purchase though.

EDIT: Yarg, not for the prices its going for on Amazon and Ebay...

I think they based an episode of MacGyver on that movie....

Went on a bit of a DVD spree. I picked up the first 13 episodes of Green Lantern, The Eye and The Descent on Blu-Ray, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo(shameless Vincent Price fan, me), Mask of Zeguy(anime I've never heard of, seems good though), the box set of Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, and last but not least, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda season 1.1.

Gotta love thrift stores.
