Oh, and it was nice of the Doctor to explain to casual viewers what the Matrix is a mere year after it was a kep component of Missy's end of season plan. I'm surprised he didn'tjust go "It's that thing you all thought was heaven". Tact for once?

Personally I don't think the majority two parters thing has worked very well this season. The Zygon story was the only stand out of the proper ones (despite the themed titles of the last two I'm more inclined to think of the end of the year as three standalone episodes that just pick up on each other's end point) . And why was the submarine story a double episode?

I really enjoyed this year and last year, but that's almost entirely due to Capaldi being bloody excellent.

Caught up the last three in a row during the week, enjoyed it and could quite happily take a break from Who for the next few years. The Xmas special trailer at the end was ****ing annoying. Did really enjoy the way the season arc felt like the books-- stuff like the Infinity Doctors, etc. Yeah, Capaldi's really come into his own and works brilliantly in the context of intense but slightly dodgy official fanfic.

Caught the Christmas ep whilst at my girlfriend's parents (they both fell asleep watching this, so read into that what you will). It was a nice fun romp, and nice to give River a proper goodbye other than the rather slight 'ghost' guff in 'The Name Of The Doctor'. Hydroflax was a fun bellowing buffoon, and I enjoyed some of the icky special effects in this. All in all, a good bit of fluff to watch after eating too much and having had some lovely lovely wine.

It was a fun romp. And it was a nice send off for River, although given how time works, she'll probably pop up again at some point.

She is indeed - in a series of spin off Big Finish dramas. The first of which pairs her with the Eighth Doctor.

Big fan of how they managed to make River marginally less completely ****ing unbearable than normal.

Other than that, was reasonable. Shame about the guest cast.

Actually enjoyed the Xmas one (very rare thing that) and it'd resequence somewhere earlier in Capaldi's run -- wish we'd seen more of River as Benny lite rather than half of the Rory/Amy arc. Great chemistry with Kingston.

So I have an evening nap and wake up to see who fandom shocked down to its Tom Baker underpants by the news that:

The Moff is leaving at the end of season 10 and will be replaced by Chris Chibnall for season 11 (it seems he was Persuaded to Stay past this last Christmas special so Chibnall could do Broadchurch 3 first, which makes the Radio Times declaring he's quit a bit click baity as it makes it sound like he's stormed out).

Said season 10 won't air till Spring 2017, the Christmas special will be the only new episode of Who this year. Not surprising considering the Autumn broadcast was basically a disaster and Sherlock commitments meaning it wouldn't start filming until too late to get the whole 12 out before Christmas anyway. I'm more surprised they're not breaking the 12 up to get at least a few more out this year though.

I'll share more thoughts when I've had proper sleep; but I was amused by the press release on Doctor Who News talking about how Chibnall was a life long fan by mentioning his 80's TV appearance, but not what he said on there...

That's excellent news.

I've been wanting to do a "from the start" rewatch without having it interrupted by a new season. Meant to start over the new year break but still haven't gotten round to it. This gives me a lot more breathing space.

I've read on some other sites and a lot of fans they're not thrilled by Chibnall taking over.

It's basically:
1) That his work on Dr. Who is either forgettable, awful, or both.

2) His work on Torchwood was awful.

3) Broadchurch season 2 is boring and/or awful.

Now I like some of his more outrageous Dr. Who stories like "Dinosaurs are Spaceship" and "The Power of Three" those were great 11th Doctor episodes just because they were just plain old fun. The rest of his work is pretty forgettable.

I have an idea for a season long arc the only problem is that I don't know how to get the Doctor out of it without the Doctor committing suicide.

Well if you get that ending resolved you should definitely drop Chibnall an email.

The only way get an ending that sort of works is to that the Doctor has to regenerate.

if you're in the London area and both are planning to buy season 9 on DVD/blu ray and like Peter Capaldi, he's going to be in the Oxford Street HMV on Monday. You have to preorder in advance (there's only 200 places), but it seems it's been very poorly advertised and less than a 100 have gone so far.

Annoyingly the guy who is keeping people on Gallifrey Base abreast of how fast the tickets are moving isn't doing so to be helpful, but to go "LOOK AT HOW UNPOPULAR DOCTOR WHO IS NOW THE SHY IS FALLING MOFF MUST GO....LIKE TWICE. DOUBLE SACK HIM"

I am in London over the weekend for the 1967 Casino Royale screening, but as I won't be getting into the City on Sunday till after HMV closes (lucky I checked, this is supposed to be the greatest city on Earth and people can't go get an overpriced CD at 7PM on a Sunday? Madness!) which means my odds will depend on there being tickets left on the Monday morning.

Plus side, if there's not I won't have to write off my 12PM return train ticket.

Lovely event. If there were only 200 people in there (and based on what people who were left an hour after me with things still in full swing have said, I suspect many more slipped in), I must have been slap in the middle, and Capaldi was funny, attentive and not at any point giving the sense of going through the motions. Even with my tired brain thinking telling him he was wearing his Doctor Who costume was a good opening gambit, you know, in case he hadn't noticed.

Though it actually wasn't his costume at all, he'd put something together from his own wardrobe that made for a best match (mainly aiming for the upper half--or the bit that would be in the photos). That's dedication and led to a nice chat about Tom's thrown together outfit you see him wearing at 70's signings. That was probably the tenth time he'd had a conversation along those lines and he was still awesome.

And whilst I'd have been happy for him to just sign the (lovely) target style Facts booklet; he insisted on signing the cover to the set as well! I suspect a few things other than the set got signed as well, I certainly saw one chap with a cane and a couple of Complete History volumes who wasn't chased off.

Basically, if you're lucky enough to have the chance to attend a Capaldi event, take it.

Yay! Hats. Cool picture "You don't remember the '70s do you Stuart?" love it. I remember the '70s. Mainly brown with outbreaks of striking, only livened up by Glam and Punk at either end.
