Go back and put a "Both" option...you'll thank me for it later...

It's only within the last few centuries that a schismatic division of knowledge into science and art has even been an issue.

Both schools of thought contain shared ground even now in the form of the Heisenburg "Uncertainty Principle" (stating that observation alters that which is observed) and the post-modernist dictum "Il n'y a pas de hors-texte" — literally, there is no outside to the text and wholly objective stances are not possible.

Science.

You can't cure a disease by quoting Shakespeare at it.

I went with science on this one.
Although I'd consider myself an artistic fellow, I consider art as a means of self exprestion, not a caltural asset (which differs from calture to calture anyway).
Science on the other hand is beneficial to most members of society, even to those who don't understand it. it also seems to be more universal, or atlist some aspects of it like mathmatics.
Art changes with fashion and the curent direction of the muse winds. science seems to be more consistant (seems and more are the key words, we still get major shifts over time).
As an individual I guess I'll have to have some type of art in my life, since art has so many fields, but without the basic comforts(basic as we learned to accept them) I'd doubt I have anytime to focus on art.

Oh, I realised what you were trying to do...just trying to undermine the question, really...:p

It's not a choice, nor did anyone ever consider it that way until recently.

I guess I have to vote for science, though eliminating art would put me out of a job. :) Art has its merits, though, and it's arguable which has a larger influence on daily life. Science has provided us with TV's, vehicles, microwave ovens, medicines, etc. But what do people end up discussing most of the time? Books, music, TV shows, movies. Granted, most of these art forms are only possible due to advances science has provided, but it seems to me that people would find life quite boring were it not for art. Too bad a good painting can't cure cancer. That's why science has taken over, and the art world has become an overcommercialized mess...

Difficult question. Can we live without science? And is life worth living without art?

I'll get back to you on this...

Most people are forgetting that anything, including science, is art...

...and unless you're suggesting that all scientists are bungling oafs, that can work the other way around, too. ;)

Art.

Art is an expression of the self, it is not always beautiful nor is it always understood by those viewing it. It is a unique facet of humanity. No other animals express themselves in such a manner.

It is not that I do not appreciate the value of science...I do. Science has done many great things for the human race but it has also been manipulated by us to do great evil (IMO) I.e Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

Art has also been manipulated for evil purposes, think of Nazi or Soviet propaganda for example...

To a degree. but I'm thinking more of the applications rather than the methods.

Art has no applications...spiritual appreciation is rather hard to quantify...
