^Nice to see some love for Origins
I had a few MOTU figures back when I was young, He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Mek-A-Neck, Kobra Khan, Beast Man, Man-E-Faces, plus Wind Raider and a second hand Castle Greyskull (the proper spelling :P ) that had none of the accessories. I loved them all and played with them as much, if not moreso than the Transformers I had.
Speaking of Origins, I did get some more. How exciting!
Stratos is one I've never been mad on, his strange monkey face is odd on an avian fella. I do like the Icarus vibes he has. Smyths only had the 'no clothes' variant, which wasn't for me, so I threw some money Amazon's way to help Jeff's space program and for the regular version. For a figure I'm a bit lukewarm on, why did I buy him? Well, an illustration from an old Ladybird book is stuck in my head and that was all the reason I needed.
Man-E-Faces. I have the old UK Box set of the old cartoon and I was a bit disappointed that this cool looking fighty fella is, erm, an actor and his face swapping gimmick was just an aide to his repertoire. Seems a bit of waste of such a cool looking design. Whatever, I loved this when I had the original and this is just as much fun, if not moreso because HE CAN TURN HIS WHOLE HEAD AS WELL. Mind blown. Do wonder if this guy was an influence on Animated Blitzwing.
Teela is one I never owned but always wanted. I loved that she wasn't just 'the girl one' but a capable warrior and a Captain to boot. The snake armour the toy has is wicked and I love the staff, which I forgot had a name - Kaa! (I really need to track down those Ladybird books, I think) She also has a shield and she looks bloody ace.
Tri-Klops can look in all directions! I remember doing a colouring in on a photocopy of a Tri-Klops picture during a rainy day playtime (this was last week) and thought he looked pretty awesome. He is, all grimacing face and big green sword. The eyes are great - I love the angry red one and the non-committal blue one.
Trap-Jaw is one of the coolest early designs. The interchangeable weapon arm is great and I like his silly crunchy jaw. Colours on this lad are brilliant, all lurid pinky-red, green and blue. I like his roboty looking legs and the sculpting on the wrist of his fleshy arm.
LOP Mer-Man I made a man at Smyths get this lad down off the top shelf (what is this, porn?) at Smyths from his special ladders. Didn't occur to me after, as I'm not an expert in He-Man, that is based on the prototype used when MOTU was going to be called Lords Of Power (glad they changed that). This is just how Mer-Man looks to me now, having owned the 200X version for some years.
Faker. What is it about evil versions of heroic characters that makes them so appealing? In his bright baby blue and neon orange, Faker isn't fooling anyone that he's He-Man (love that the mini-comic makes him have some sort of camouflage gimmick), but damn if he doesn't look awesome. Love the silly sticker / decal giving him some robot bits on his chest.
Castle Greyskull - I did chuckle that this has actually been anglicised on the box. I never had a complete one and this just looked great, especially as it's surprisingly reasonable for the price and comes with a figure. I enjoyed putting it all together and sticking the silly stickers on. The lift and trap door features are great fun "You are The Weakest Link. Goodbye!". I like the weapons rack and the spinny thing for practising your fighting with. The jawbridge has a nice feature too - you unlock it by poking the Power Sword into a slot in the front. The Sorceress is pretty awesome, coming in some mini-comic variant outfit I know nothing about. The plain white outfit isn't as boring as it seems, the translucent wings are fancy and she has that wavy thing for doing the magic. She's cool and now I don't have to bother picking her up separately, which feels like winning. I do like it when playsets actually come with a figure to interact with.
I also bought the
Land Shark. Wasn't going to bother with the vehicles (although I could go for a Roton), but this was reduced on Amazon and thought it'd be fun to shove Trap Jaw in. It's still in the box, but looks fun!
I've actually had more fun playing with these than most of the Transformers I've bought this year. They're bright, colourful figures with memorable designs and fun play features, with some decent articulation. More importantly, they are designed to be played with, rather than stuck on a shelf to be viewed in silent awe. Brilliant stuff.
