Rapido bristled as Megatron's words sank in, inwardly cursing himself as the realization that the Prime would die on his watch. It made no difference that he couldn't have predicted the outcome, or that he and Kup had warned Zeta of coming alone, and the possiblity that this was a trap. The death of the Prime would forever be linked to him and Kup. The soldiers who didn't stop it from happening.

Rapido controlled his anger and shame, knowing that to raise his weapons and fire at those inside the room would, at best, take out two or three Decepticons before he was taken out himself. He walked over to Zeta, catching up to him as they left the main hall. "Sir, let's get out of here as quickly as possible. As soon as we're on the shuttle, we can send a comm message to Iacon. Get them to send Ratchet or someone else who could meet us halfway - possibly help." The hope still evident in his voice.

--------------------

"Yes," Thrust said to the Vehicons, "You are welcome to join us. We can always claim that you met up with us on the way and are here for prisoner transfer." As he said the last part, it hit him that they had not said their names when they came along side him. "I'm sure Predacon will reward such initiative. Who should I tell him showed such promise?"

Prison Shuttle

Lugnut grunted, unimpressed. "Yeah, Skywarp's good when you don't need him to think too hard," he told Obsidian.

The hulking bruiser looked around, but the array of controls and terminals that Obsidian was looking at baffled him. So he shrugged and asked, "What do you need me to do?"

Governor's Palace

"I'll be along in just one minute, Rapido. Ironhide and Orion should still be aboard the shuttle. Tell them to make sure the engines are warm."

Then he turned away and said, "Et tu, Scorponok?"

It was stupid thing to do, it really was. Zeta Prime knew it was stupid, even as he did it. he knew that Rapido was right, that he should leave, now, and get medical care as soon as he possibly could. But he just couldn't help himself. He tried to ignore the insult like a thinking, rational being would. He really did. But on top of all the slights and threats and attempted murder that Megatron had heaped on him, this was just too much. Something inside the Autobot leader snapped, and slowly, ever so slowly, he turned to face the ex-senator.

"Oooh, you're in trouble now," Predacon told his cohort.

"This, from the coward who fled the city because he was too afraid to stand up and defend the crooked construction company he owned?" Zeta's expression was a scornful one. "Normally, fugitive, I would tell you that you're not worth my time." His optics narrowed. "But today is a very special day."

With the smooth, untelegraphed reflexes of a the seasoned warrior that he used to be, Zeta Prime closed the distance between himself and Scorponok and swung his staff in an overhand arc aimed at the Decepticon's head.
_____________________________________

Megatron was surprised by Zeta Prime's gumption, he had to admit that. He never would have expected the Autobot to take a swing at someone when he was outnumbered 100-to-1.

He's smarter than he lets on, Megatron admitted silently. He knows that I can't let anything happen to him. If my troops get rowdy and shoot him, he gets to die a martyr in battle instead of wasting away like an old, obsolete fool.

Reluctantly, Megatron had to admit that Zeta had him outmanoeuvred. No matter what he did now, he would come away looking like the bad guy.

Well played, he thought as he made his way through the crowd toward the fight, hoping to contain it before it got any worse.

"Sixshot, with me. Please restrain your creator before he ruins everything we're trying to achieve here."

The chattier of the two Vehicons answered Thrust in a confused voice. "We're...Vehicons, of course. What else would we be, sir?"

The two jets split up, one falling in on either side of the Decepticon formation to stand between the higher-ranking troops and any external threats that might manifest, as their preprogrammed training dictated.

Prison Shuttle

Contrary to Lugnut's unimpressed tone, Obsidian's tone was quite satisfied when he said, "Excellent," in regards to Skywarp being basically a tool.

"While the others exercise their trigger happy fingers, you and I are going to pay the captain of this ship a visit and capture him alive. I have disabled communications, but having someone to answer the hails of the orbital prison would be... preferable. After all, while I do think that the officers below have been confused by our sudden disappearance, they might have tried to alert the orbital prison."

Obsidian detached himself out of the console, and hovered his way out of the door. Beside him Grimlock slammed onto a surprised guard, ramming his blade through the hapless mech's stomach, sending sparks and oil shooting everywhere.

If it were someone more volatile, like, say, Predacon, who Zeta Prime turned on, the result would have been disastrous.

Thankfully, Scorponok was well-versed in the more subtle arts of politics and propaganda.

Scorponok instinctively raised his claws and stinger, ready to block the blow, but he relaxed, lowering his claws and allowed Zeta Prime to whack him on the right side of his skull.

It hurt, and it sheared off one of Scorponok's horns. The former Senator suspected his helmet was dented as well.

"I did not flee the city because of my company." Scorponok replied to Zeta, his words dripping with scornful anger, trying to block out the pain as he moved backwards to avoid another blow. "I removed myself temporarily so I could assist in cleaning out the vermin that populate every other seat in the Senate."

Scorponok laughed, a dark, mocking laugh. "I was a Senator, Zeta Prime. I knew what was going on behind your back- behind all your backs! Compared to some of the other Senators, to some of the other business dealers, I might as well be a Templar Knight! You have no idea how much power the Senate has, Zeta Prime- even more than you do- and none of them are used for proper pursuits."

Scorponok spat. "Time for this to change, I think."

Sixshot blinked.

Zeta Prime was fighting Creator Scorponok.

Leader Megatron told him to restrain the fight.

Was he allowed to terminate?

Who is he going to restrain?

"What would you have me do, Leader?" Sixshot asked Megatron, pulling out his hypersonic cannons, but not aiming them at either combatant.

Rapido shot a quick message to those on the shuttle. "Get the shuttle ready for evac as quickly as you can. Maximum power to engines. We shouldn't have to worry about our exit strategy anymore." He finished, knowing the latter part was true - unless someone had an itchy trigger finger, and a death wish that Megatron would surely carry out himself.

Rapido looked on as Zeta and Scorponok exchanged their verbal, and physical, volly.

--------------------

"I know you're Vehicons." Thrust said, his voice rising a bit. "But how do we tell you apart? If you have the same talents and same color scheme, is there any real difference between you?"

Somewhere in Kaon

Okay, to be honest, somewhere under Kaon. When Cybertronians go underground, they go underground...

Wheelie was 80% survival programming with a whole 20% left over for everything else. This, quite possibly, explained a lot.

He was a supreme adaptor, able to quickly assimilate environmental and cultural situations; all his race could, to be fair, but Wheelie was extraordinarily good at it. It was a strategy designed to keep him functional for as long as possible. Since his particular line - Forward Recon Scout - was deemed expendible.

Not that he had been needed as a Scout since he was Sparked. The planet was (for the most part) at peace.

It was just a little hard to make a living when your niche didn't exist.

So: Wheelie made a niche.

His haul included five good pieces of platinum plating, assorted Cybertronium flakes and a good handful of miscellaneous cables. Dump raiding was dangerous, but it was profitable. He could sell this stuff to one of the recycling centres where no questions were asked.

With a sigh, he settled back to take a rest, although his audials remained sharply alert. He was short of Energon, but that was nothing new. Once he had recharged, he could go sort out some more.

Wheelie was not much of a long term planner, see?

Lugnut shrugged. "You got it, boss," he told Obsidian. "You want me to rip his arms and legs off for you?"

He followed the much smaller Decepticon out of the cabin they'd been in, grumpily hunching over to pass through the tiny shipboard door.

"Who designed this thing?" he grumbled aloud, "a Minicon?"

Zeta Prime laughed. "If you cared about changing the senate for the better," he said scornfully to Scorponok, "you would come back to me and face down your accusers. But you and I both know that you won't. So by all means, stay here and live a long life with your cowardice."

He practically spat the last word at the Decepticon traitor before spinning on his heel and stalking away.

"Come on," he said to Rapido. "Time for us to get out of here."

Predacon chuckled as Zeta Prime gave Scorponok a dressing-down. "Well, he sure told you," he said sarcastically.

Megatron held up a hand to forestall any further action by Sixshot.

"Hold," he said. "The problem seems to have resolved itself."

The Vehicons were silent for a minute before the chattier of the two answered Thrust.

"Not really," he said. "We're only a few hours old, and individuality isn't really in our program. So we're all pretty much the same."

"That's not true," the other Vehicon cut in gruffly. "He talks more."

The first Vehicon chuckled. "Yes, I suppose I do."

Prison Shuttle

"If you are so inclined." Obsidian told Lugnut. "The captain has no strategic importance for us except to get us close enough. "

Obsidian waited until the large, bulky Decepticon had squeezed himself out of the door, and then moved towards the cockpit of the shuttle. "Most likely not. The poor Minicons are oppressed under the corrupt rule of the Senate. If you so notice, no Minicons or Micromasters hold a seat in the Senate -- there is a reason for that. One that, I believe, would change under our Master's rule."

Without even an aside glance, Obsidian raised his right arm, sending five missiles shooting out and slamming a guard on the chest, causing him to fly across the side corridor with a crash.

Presumably with Lugnut in tow, Obsidian approached the cockpit, seeing that it was sealed shut. The Air Commander gestured for Lugnut. "If you would do the honours of opening the door..."

Scorponok roared with more raucous laughter as Zeta Prime. "A long life of cowardice? Better than a short death caused by folly, I think! And don't you worry, I shall be paying my accussers a visit very soon."

Scorponok gave Predacon a look that told the other scientist that he regarded the whole thing as a sick joke. Indeed, he did not even look the slightest bit insulted, he was grinning as if the whole thing had been a hilarious matter.

For Scorponok's twisted logic, anyway, it was.

Once Zeta Prime was out of view, Scorponok turned to regard Megatron. "Sorry 'bout that, boss." He said, but his tone was not very apologetic.

Sixshot nodded, grateful that he was not to attack Creator Scorponok. Although he briefly wondered whether he had been supposed to shoot Scorponok.

Governor's Palace

The small unit known as Brains hung back in the shadows of an ornamental arch and peered about until the way was clear.

"Lessee... Megatron? Nope. Scorponok? Nope. That er... Sixshot? Nope."

Muttering, he darted off across what might be loosely described (in human reference terms) as the formal garden, his wild shock of sensor wires whipping in the wind.

Things were difficult for a mech who, having been created to deliver a specific message, somehow forgot just to whom he was supposed to deliver it. He had no idea what the message was - it was embedded in his systems and could only be recovered by the recipient.

Brains hunched down beside a mercury-tinkling fountain, alone and gradually getting more bothered. It wasn't as if he could ask any others of his kind what to do. For some reason, he seemed to be the only current specimen of his line, as far as he knew.

"Good. Nice to know there is some difference between you all." Thrust replied to the Vehicons. "Well, would you like a name, or some kind of designation?" Thrust saw that they were nearing their destination. "Alright everyone. Game faces on. We made it in time for the code to still be active. Everyone remember the plan?"

(OOC: @Ulcrain, Obsidian's team and Thrust's team are going for entirely different targets; Obsidian's team is hijacking an orbital prison, while Thrust's team are going to break out the prisoners in the Altihex prison with Mindwipe's keycard. You guys don't have to wait for Obsidian's team to infiltrate anything)

Prison Shuttle

Lugnut shrugged. "A mech's gotta have fun somehow," he told Obsidian shamelessly.

He listened to the air commander's speech about Minicons and representation, frowning thoughtfully even though he really didn't understand any of it. Politics were so far beyond beyond the simple soldier's comfort zone that he'd never even tried to figure them out. The idea of having to take out his enemies secretly or with words instead of just ripping them apart was more than enough to put him off of the idea.

Approaching the door that Obsidian had indicated, the giant Decepticon drew his fist back and knocked it off of it's hinges with a single punch. Then he walked into the room and spun his machine guns to face the captain and his copilot.

"Nobody moves, nobody dies," he told them.

Zeta Prime didn't do Scorponok the honour of deigning to answer his taunts. He didn't look back or acknowledge the fallen senator in any way as he walked out of the ballroom.

"In case I don't make it," he told Rapido calmly, "please make sure my successors remember to throw that pompous sack of slag into a deep, dark hole in the ground."
_____________________________________

Megatron gave Scorponok a cold look, holding the ex-senator's gaze and not looking away.

"Let me make one thing perfectly clear," he said. "If something like that ever happens again, I will personally kill you where you stand. The Decepticons aren't a vehicle for settling your personal grudges, Senator," he twisted the word like he'd twist an energon knife inside someone he was fighting. "If you can't rally enough self-control to keep your mouth shut for two minutes, then I'll be happy to ask my idiot brother to escort you back to whatever hole the four of you," he indicated Thunderwing and Tarantulas as well, "have been hiding in and let someone else have the pleasure of cutting apart our Autobot prisoner."

Predacon saw a funny-looking little creature (that is, Brains) dart across his field of vision. But by the time he looked over there it was gone.

Must be all the stress getting to me, he thought, in spite of blatantly not caring about Megatron dressing down one of his partners in crime.

"I uh, guess?" The chattier of the two Vehicons told Thrust. "I mean, I never really thought of it but it'll probably make your job a lot easier if you could call us something, right?"

The second Vehicon spoke up. "Well, I don't remember the plan. What'll you need us for, boss?"

Prison Shuttle

“But of course. Not everyone finds fun in organizing massive troops of soldiers in order to completely annihilate an enemy physically, on the ground, on the air, on the waters, through economics, through politics, as well as emotionally and spiritually, I admit.” Obsidian replied to Lugnut.

Obsidian nodded in approval as Lugnut opened them an entrance to the cockpit. He hovered in after Lugnut, the captain and copilot smart enough not to attack the far-larger Lugnut.

“I concur with my comrade’s assessment: and, please do. It would be much more pleasant for those involved if you two are not killed.” Obsidian told the captain.

The Captain grunted. He was a relatively generic-looking Autobot soldier. Grays and browns. He wasn’t like those fancy kids, dresssing themselves up in blues and reds and purples and flame decals and decking themselves up with horns and wacky guns. “Who are ye people? I know ye, ye’re General something-or-other.”

“Indeed I am.” Obsidian said. “A General, that is. And as a General, I would make a proposition. Tell me, dear Captain… do you enjoy being an Autobot soldier?”

“It puts money on my plate, yeah.” The Captain grunted.

“And the government, do they treat you well? This…. ‘Sentinel’. Your leader, is he? Do they treat you well? Fairly?” Obsidian asked. Before the Captain could answer, Obsidian continued, “Of course, they don’t. You have no connections whatsoever to those holding the power in the Senate. Otherwise you won’t be here doing a thankless job shipping up food for a bunch of has-been Destron prisoners in space. But it can change.” Obsidian narrowed his optics. “Serve us and our master, and I promise you, you will be able to reap benefits befitting your own merit.”

The Captain bit his lips.

“Do not tarry for too long, Captain.” Obsidian’s tone was less converstional and colder this time. “My men are out there taking care of your security detail, and they include a gladiator champion with serious anger management, an experimental walking weapon, and a… how did the dossier describe Skywarp… a ‘mad, walking bag of dynamites and a complete lunatic without common sense that should not be allowed near anything sharp’.”

The Captain was more subdued after hearing this. “I’ll deal. What will you have me do? Just… just let the men go.”

“Good chap.” Obsidian said, “Steer this ship towards the prison. No communications will come between you and them, other than the necessary ones. You shall report, of course, that there was nothing wrong in the transport.” Obsidian folded his arms. “I shall spare your crew… what remains of your crew… but none of you are to get out from this shuttle if you wish to survive. You are unknown elements, and I do not want to waste my time pondering your allegiances. As long as you cooperate, you will survive.”

“You can’t be serious!” The copilot snarled, “You can’t be seriously dealing with these… these madmen!”

Obsidian sighed, and gestured at the copilot with his long fingers, as if gesturing at a small insect. “Lugnut, if I could trouble you…”

Governor's Palace

Scorponok returned Megatron’s glare unflinchingly.

“It will not happen again, Governor.” Scorponok told Megatron as he pulled himself up from the ground. He didn’t blanch at the usage of the word Senator, it was less a title to him then something that he could flaunt about when convenient. “You don’t have to worry about that.”

Scorponok did not take scrap from anyone, but Megatron… Megatron was different. He radiates power. He radiates leadership. The bit of Scorponok that wasn’t a vile, backstabbing, manipulative mad scientist (admittedly a small bit) knew, then, that this was one leader that he would be… well, not loyal, of course… but, well, not one he would disobey without a good reason, anyway.

Scorponok glared at Predacon, a blatant unspoken ‘don’t say a word’ in his optics.

"No worries Zeta. You can make sure of it yourself once you're well again." He said, trying to keep the other bot in high spirits." But if you can't, I'll make sure both him and Megatron pay for what they've done." Rapido said in reply to Zeta as they walked out, the chill evident in his voice.

---------------------------

"Cloak and Dagger? Thing 1 and Thing 2? Heck if I know." Thrust said in reply to the Vehicons. "Your names should be your own choice - something that identifies you. If you don't know yet, hold off. Until then, how about Brick and Hammer?"

As far as the mission? Our keycard here has all of the codes to get into the prison. We are "transporting" a few prisoners, which the two Vehicons will play the role of. Once inside, we neutralize the main guards and lock the place down. We go free the political prisoners, and any who wish to join the Decepticons. Then we get the heck out of dodge. Any questions?"

(OOC: I think that's right, but if it needs to be adjusted, please let me know. Been awhile since we came up with the original plan, and didn't have time to go dig through the post to find it.)

Prime's Shuttle:

As soon as they got Rapido's message, Ironhide and Orion started bringing the shuttle's systems from stand-by to full activation.

Orion's optics narrowed as he sat at the helm, tapping keys and checking readouts.

Ironhide sat at the nav/ops console, checking the readouts for the engines, shields, and sundry subsystems as they powered up. "Whut?"

Orion went from scanning his board to checking the screens and looking through viewports. "I don't know. Something doesn't feel right."

"'Course it don't feel rahght. We're sittin' smack-dab in th' middle'a a city that don't lahke us very much, an' we're waitin' on Zeta." The old Autobot gave an annoyed snort. "Ain't holdin' too kahndly with this dip-lomacy stuff. Too many dips makin' a mess'a things awlready."

Orion processed that for a few moments, still getting used to Ironhide's odd speech patterns. "What do you think we should do?"

Ironhide shrugged. "Ah'm awl fer stompin' th' problem b'fore it gets worse."

"That wouldn't make the citizens here like us any more than they do now."

"True. Best way ta deal with it'd be ta fahnd out whut's got 'em so riled up'n th' first place, an' then stomp that. Problem is, Ah don't think they're gonna give us enough tahme ta fahnd out." He then spun his chair to face Orion. "An' whut you gotta remember is th' fact that we protect th' Prahme. Goin' out an' figgerin' out whut's goin' on ain't th' job. Stompin' anything tryin' ta kill him is."

Tarantulas chuckled a little. Seeing Scorponok making a fool out of himself was amusing to him. Not to mention the reprimand that he received from Megratron. "Almost cost me the change to exaime Magnus there," he said to Scorponok. "I would've been very unhappy if that would have been the case."

--------

"Lets make sure we get out of Kaon in one piece first," Kup said to Rapido. He made sure that they weren't followed or that even one of the 'Cons tried to attack them from behind.

"These Decepticons are a whole different kind of enemy than we've ever faced before, haven't we?" Kup said while he was walking with Zeta Prime and Rapido back towards the shuttle. "Political battles have never been my field of expertise, but even I could tell that this is only going to get worse."

--------

Governor's Palace, Holding chamber

repair cycle complete; systems online

Magnus came back online now that his repair systems managed to restore the damage done to his frame enough for him to be able to move again. He wasn't out of trouble just yet. While he was still functioning, he could feel it in his spark that something was wrong with him. He had taken way too much damage. A normal mech would have fallen against the barrage that he received from Sixshot.

While his vision wasn't fully returned yet, he could make out that he was in a holding cell. Much to his surprise, he wasn't shackled, but it didn't matter that much. There was nothing in teh room that he could use for a means of escape to to overpower the guards with. Not in his condition anyway. All he could do right now was sit down, meditate and wait for what his captors have in store for him.

Governor's Palace (grounds)

The place was not exactly crawling with mechs, but there seemed to be an awful lot of them...

Brains muttered a rounded imprecation on everyone bigger than himself - which was almost everyone - and dropped down to crawl under a classic design spica bush. The thin, sharp metal leaves formed an arch over him which no sensible mech would want to put a hand through if he valued his paintjob.

Oh, yeah. But he could still get himself shot. Probably as vermin.

"What am I gonna do?" he half-wailed to himself. "I'm faulting! Gonna hafta go back to..." He shuddered involuntarily, plates clinking. "Soundwave."

In fact, Brains had subconsciously woven a lot of information scraps into a result so unacceptable that his own self-defence systems had locked his memory circuits down.

Prison Shuttle

Lugnut shrugged. "You're the boss," he told Obsidian.

Although being a Decepticon -- an extremely loyal one at that -- Lugnut wasn't especially fond of murder. Oh, he'd kill you easily enough if you picked a fight with him or if you were standing on the opposite side of the battlefield. But this? This was a bit outside his comfort zone, neither sporting nor particularly fun. But the great Megatron obviously trusted this Obsidian, so if he said it needed to be done...

The massive Decepticon took one long stride forward, placing one hand on the copilot's shoulder (although his massive digits wrapped around much of the smaller mech's torso) to pin him to his seat while the other wrapped around the Autobot's neck and tore it clean off of it's socket. Then he stepped back, leaving the mangled Autobot in his seat, his head dangling from an assortment of still-intact wires.

Is this the difference between war and what I used to do? he asked himself. Killing people that I don't want to kill?

Governor's Palace

Zeta Prime smiled at Rapido, but it was evident from the shakiness of the expression that he was already starting to feel weak.

"Thank you," he told the younger Autobot. "I appreciate that."

He met Kup's query with a grave nod. "Much, much worse," he told the old soldier. "This Megatron doesn't understand just how fragile our society truly is. Or if he does, he doesn't care. These Decepticons could be responsible for the death of us all."

A part of him wanted to add that he was almost happy that he wouldn't be around to see it, but -- although there was a grain of truth to it -- a Prime simply couldn't say things like that in front of his men. He couldn't think of a thing that would demoralize them more than that.

After a few minutes' walk, they'd arrived at the shuttle. Zeta's weakness was more pronounced, now, and he'd resorted to using his staff of office as a crutch to keep himself upright.

Megatron nodded grimly, then swept his gaze across the room. "I believe we're done here," he told his Decepticons. "Return to your duties, and prepare...for war."

Then he smiled up at Sixshot.

"Your creators are going to interrogate our Autobot prisoner," he said. "Stay with them. Watch as the Autobot is broken, and learn what makes their kind tick. A weapon such as yourself needs that kind of understanding."

Predacon grinned at Scorponok.

"What?" he asked. "I didn't say anything."

However, he had to admit that he shared Tarantulas's annoyance at the prospect of not being able to cut up Magnus. Oh, he didn't really expect to learn anything from it, but it sounded like it would be a quick spot of fun anyway.

"Sure, why not?" the first Vehicon agreed with Thrust's idea. "I guess I'll be Hammer?"

The other Vehicon -- Brick, by default -- said, "I like the plan."

Hammer agreed. "Nice, simple. Easy to follow. Only question is, what do we do with the ones who won't join? Do we leave them be, or slag 'em?"

Brick chuckled. "I wanna slag 'em!"
