Your first memories of "The Killing Joke"

Post by Zeeks »

This piece seems to be such a seminal work that I think it deserves a "where were you when you first read it?" thread.

This was my first TPB. Ever. It was the summer of 88, I believe. The Burton Batman film had been out and exposed me to the world of not only Batman, but comics in general. That summer, Mom and I took a trip out to MN to see her sister, and my cousin Brian introduced me to the wonders of comics. We took a ride to a comic store, and I bought it.
It was a great summer. It opened up a whole new world for me. And the cold reality of what happened to Barbara Gordon was a smack in the face.
I remember the scent of the air in that comic shop. It was a most beatiful thing.

I forget specifics, but young enough to be more interesting in the cartoon nudity than the weighty adult plot.

And to a young chap, such as you and I, presumably going through puberty, that is all that matters. :D

I'm pretty sure the killing joke is the only batman comic I actually own, aside from some random issue with shiva and the tengu mask. Found it in a pile of stuff my brothers left out when I was a nipper, in a box with some freak brothers, some crump, some punisher, and third world war.

I never found the joke all that funny TBH.

That said, it has only been rivaled by dark knight in the ones that I have read. And the joker looks way cool in that hawaiian shirt and hat. First memories of it though.. erm... pass, but I imagine I read it when we had just moved to france. Unpacking maybe.

That's the point isn't it? It's not evena good joke...

I'm also shocked that the sight of a naked Gordon did so much for Denyer and Zeeks. :eyebrow:

So is that the characters "New" origin story then? Dear God. Is Barbara still in a wheelchair?

Non-continuity. DC do a lot of variant versions of Batman tales...

Yeah, despite several offers of fixes, Oracle's still paralysed.

Also: geeky (librarian) redhead. My tastes were establishing themselves even back then... Batgirl Year One's not bad, either.
