photobucket is extremely popular, allows direct linking, a large amount of storage space, only bad thing is theres a limit to both the file size and dimension size of your images (i believe)
I've had to shop around for other hosting for my myspace background because I made it to the exact right size, but when I uploaded to photobucket it was extremely small... when I say shop I mean look.

Got a broadband connection, a router that allows for port forwarding, and an old, spare, reliable PC?
Host your own server! I've got a Windows 2000 Server box running IIS and FTP that I use for experimenting. (Hasn't been hacked yet!) Given the age of the compinents and the "reliability" of my Linksys router, I haven't moved all my image hosting to it yet, but it does offer an alternative solution.
